Maybe its just me but does anyone else get bothered by these guys who run for a country they aren't actually from. You could find 50+ million people with German heritage in the US. It's so lame he pretends he is German just to travel to meets he has no business being at. He wouldn't have sniffed the US team and made this final through luck with being in the right heat and because Woody tripped.

This could have been posted in the "Drew just ran 3:54" thread (and perhaps should be), but i have to say...

They're doing more than any current NP runner or alumni. Throw in the coach, the parents, any faculty , and none (this means you, Nico) have run faster than Drew or made it to the WC, much less a final.

But Germany has come with around 80 athletes. They just lost about anybody in the first round. Worst championship in history.

This is common in soccer, the US national soccer team usually has a large percentage of players who set foot in the US for the first time when they come to play for the team. Here is an old clip I found about a US player who criticized the practice. He was roasted for his comments as being a xenophone of course:

Nico has a faster 5k PR than Drew and Parsons. Drew made it in a weak year and Parsons only made it because he switched citizenship.

Hunter is 24, Parsons is 28. Nico is NINETEEN.
In their main event, Nico has run 13:11, 6 seconds faster than Hunter and 13 seconds faster than Parsons.

Parsons wouldn’t have even sniffed the US team but got a nice free ride to the world final. If Nico suddenly claimed he was German he’d be there instead.

well- you do have to be in the top 3 for the other country.

and- you have to meet the Olympic or World qualifying standard.

and I guess you have to have meet the citizenship standard of the other country.

But other than those issues, yes, absolutely anybody and everybody can run for any country in any track meet.

I speak Jamaican and plan on vacationing there. Do you think they will let me run the 5k for them? Ya Mon

While you're technically correct, this is a pretty intellectually dishonest take. If we assume that NP became NP with Nico, it's not really fair to compare Drew Hunter to NP runners. Drew is 24 and Nico is 19 (and everyone else from NP is obviously younger). Yes, nobody from NP has run 3:34/3:54 but Nico has run 3:37/3:56i when he was 5 years younger than Drew and Colin Sahlmen has run 3:39/3:56 as a high schooler. When they're 24, I'm pretty sure they'll be as fast or faster than Drew. You also failed to acknowledge that Drew hasn't run 13:11 like Nico has.

The Parsons take is even worse. Yes, he technically made the WC final but that's because he was able to make the German team and got lucky being in the second heat. There is no way he was making the final if he was in the first heat and also there was no way he was making the US team. There's no legitimate argument that he's better than Nico right now (and again, he's 9 years older than Nico).

#2 For the distance events are we really getting a World Champs if good athletes are left home because you can only send 3 athletes (4 for countries that had the event winner the previous year)?

#3 & then there's the problem of governing bodies not fielding full teams even when they have qualified athletes + World Athletics implementing tighter standards so that each country cannot send 3 athletes. Don't hate the player, hate the game. We're living in a much more global world in 2022. It makes sense for top athletes to position themselves to make World Championships that can really boost their bottom lines in a sport where money isn't well spread out.

Very few of those fifty million of us with German heritage could run for Germany even if we are fast enough. The heritage is too far in the past but if you have a parent who was a German citizen you can. How do you know he's "pretending" to be German as opposed to deciding to be German?

was thinking about this issue yesterday. With so many people switching nations to make a team simply because they are not good enough to make a team in the country they were born and raised in, World Athletics needs to make some kind of rule where you are from country A but now run for country B. You must live in country B for something like 60% of the year. I am willing to bet someone like Parsons doesn't even have a legal German address

Why? It's not like Parsons makes the championships worse. Okay, maybe he annoys you personally, but from my more distant perspective I think it's cool that a guy really on the edge made it through to the final. And I'm more envious/impressed that he had a way into the world champs than I am mad he's there.

I'm not from Germany, USA or Kazakhstan, but given that, as a previous poster mentions, SP has two German parents and so qualifies fairly routinely for repping Germany. My guess is that the latest posse of extremely fast Kenyan women now running for Kazakhstan bring a rather less robust Kazakhstan lineage with them. I'm sure they are shouting from the rooftops in Nur-Sultan supporting their 'compatriots'.

Why are so many people upset that he's in the final? I watched his interview and he seemed like such an easy guy to root for. He was so excited just to make the final, and he loves the sport. I guess you could be upset that he chose to run for Germany so that he didn't need to run the trials, but he made the final fair and square. He was a decent college runner who grinded for years and made his first World final. Isn't that worth celebrating?

There's so much hate for no reason when TME athletes get something done by the rules. Hunter making his first World's team, winning the 2mile indoor from the B heat, and now Parsons making the world final. If you don't think Drew should have made the 2019 team, take it up with USATF, not an athlete chasing the dream. If you think the heats should have been divided differently, complain to WA, not about an athlete who just made their first global final completely legally.
