There’s either 40 or 41 runners in this race.

Yes, on the World Athletics website it lists 41 starters. Not sure how up-to-date that list is. Beautiful course.
Many of the Kenyan and Ethiopian runners' best times are between 2:17 and 2:18. For reference, a 2:18 marathon is 3:17.5 per K. 2:17 is 3:16 per K.
The odds of these runners holding this pace for the entirety of the event are slim. But, there will probably be 1 or 2 who can do it while the rest die off. The question is whether Bates or Hall can hang off the back and then pick off a bunch of them in the last 10K.
3:10 fifth kilometer, at 2:16 pace. You could hang off this pace and still rip a pretty significant PR if you're any American. I get sticking your nose in it (K D'A), but discretion may be the better part of valor here for all the USA ladies.
