How about we start with teachers, police, nurses… you know the people that actually contributed to society. Not some delusional Americans that have a hard time beating b level Kenyans.
We're only 2 years away from Paris 2024 the next big meet. Glad Willie might be able to bring home the 1st fundamental change for USA T&F to San Diego area. Willie sure has the brains for this sort of 're-imagining track and field".
Interesting take. I think you can continue your logic to focus on things that contribute more society" in various directions. Why stop at teachers, police, and nurses? Why not focus on books, racial inequality, and medical advancements? What about on global hunger? What contributes more to the future of society than global warning?
Just pointing out that finding the most "meaningful" way to contribute is perhaps a wasted effort. Potentially better to just contribute on anything that is meaningful.
Story includes pessimistic view of sport's future by Dwight Stones, like Banks a former WR holder.

I know this will offend some people but the truly elite athletes already make a living wage. And for the rest it's basically a hobby anyways so I'm not that empathetic that some of them need to work normal jobs like the rest of us
I often see the phrase, “living wage”, but no one ever really defines what it actually is…
Did they define what an "elite" is? I think an elite is someone who can enter a Diamond League meet or something of that calibre. Doesn't necessarily have to be an Olympian but it's not just everyone with a sponsor. In each event there are no more than a handful of elites in the US.
You know, I like dreamers and aspirational strivers as much as anyone. If it takes USATF using some of their Nike largesse in this long-overdue fashion to support them better, then bully for them. To echo other responses here, I wouldn't trust USATF to dole out the funds in the most optimal manner. There probably will be some corrupt influence that guides funds to those who have little need, same as has been the case with some of the USATF Foundation grant recipients. But don't get it twisted, any money USATF gives out to this end wouldn't be going to public servants otherwise.
It'll be a boom for Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce if UCLA's Wille Banks can pull it off. L.A. would become the de facto pro training camp and permanent residence of players the same today as the NFL, NBA, MLB has been for over 100 years.
None of those sports have one spot that is the permanent residence.
How about we start with teachers, police, nurses… you know the people that actually contributed to society. Not some delusional Americans that have a hard time beating b level Kenyans.
Because USATF is not charged with producing teachers, cops, or nurses.
He complains about NBC producers, but he sure did take their money and defend their broadcasts forever. Whenever anyone criticized their crap coverage, Dwight would say “well, you were still watching weren’t you?” We were held hostage by this self-aggrandizing idiot who cares nothing for the sport and only for himself. He’d turn track and field into LIV golf if he got the chance.
He had his chance for YEARS to criticize the producers. But he didn’t want to rock the boat with his little personal cash cow while his sport was dying on the vine. Now that he is in (forced) retiree, he has things to say.
Well here is what I have to say: YOU WERE COMPLICIT, BOOMER.

That's a valid point and I absolutely dislike his announcing, analysis and style. But I do appreciate him being so point blank and real, that's refreshing even though it won't amount to much.

Teachers, police, and nurses actually get paid pretty well after 10+ years on the job. Especially for the days off they get. At least they do in CA anyways. It’s not “rich money”, but it’s comfortable living.
Actually if you’re a traveling nurse and pick up extra shifts you might have “rich money” lol

This is squarely on the nose. Until reminded by this post, I'd forgotten Stones's habit of jumping to the defensive any time someone offered criticism of meet coverage by NBC. There was never even grudging acknowledgement, he tended to pompously regard any critics as naive peons who couldn't appreciate his/his broadcast team's pristine style. Except naive peons were consumers of his work, customers for his network's ad sales department, and indicative of whether said network could grow that consumer demographic. Yeah, never cared for Stones either and glad I'd mostly forgotten him until now.
Wilie is a Hollywood lawyer. It's the NFL and NBA money for TV sports at So Fi Stadium and Intuit Dome at LAX that's making Hollywood crazy now. Willie is going to merge us into the new era which for the first 20 years will be cost $4 Billion to $6 Billion per research laboratory and integrated stadium such as So Fi and Intuit.

There are six American men and six American women in the top 20 of world SP rankings. How many of them do you think are making a living wage?
How about four American men and five American women in the top 20 of world HT rankings?
