Depends on what you mean by “value.” How many guys have run under 3:35? Hocker, Teare, Nuguse, Engels, Wynn, Gregorek, Thompson, Alexander, Ciattie and Kessler. Not all have them can run under 3:35 in a given year and only five of them made the final. Of those five, two finished inside the top three. If Drew makes the final and has a good day, he’s on the team.
Compare that to the 5,000m. Fisher, Kincaid, Nur, Mantz, Bor, Young, McGorty, Radcliffe, Chelimo all ran 13:17 or faster. 9 guys again, might be forgetting a few. Of those 9, 7 ran 13:17 or faster in the final at USAs. That’s just in the final, not considering all the other time trials where these guys can run faster than that. On Drew’s best day, his PR, which he ran in CA in a time trial setting, he’s 9 seconds off the team. 7 guys can run his PR in hot weather in a tactical race. The 15 is more likely to go tactical. The tactics in the 5 are completely different.
