This would be interesting if the root cause was guns. The 30% increase is a byproduct of COVID shutdowns pushed by the left. So, now who really cares about the welfare of the youth in this country? The shutdowns were terrible for kids, as it caused some to become more isolated and commit suicide (primarily white kids), and others (especially the poor) lost a year or more of education that they will never get back and will affect their lifetime earnings to the tune of 17 trillion dollars to roam the streets and start shooting each other (the homicide deaths were primarily among black youths).

Puerto Ricans, Rednecks, Scandinavians, Mexicans, White Supremacists, Koreans, Japanese, LBGQT/LMNOP, Filipinos, Indians, Hippies, Native Americans, Mexicans, Mormons, Baptists, Buddhists, Catholics, Atheists, African immigrants, African Americans, Italians, Samoans, Chinese, Danes, Swiss, Punjabi, Bengali, Maori? All of them can buy guns. Are they all using them to kill each other?
If we can't identify who's killing whom then how do we expect to address this problem?

What has changed? Guns have been around a really long time without idiots going in and shooting up classrooms. Encouraging sanctity for life is a great place to start. Having parents that are teaching ethics/values is another.

This is at the same time that several media companies (e.g., NYT, CNN, NBC) were encouraging black people to arm themselves for self-defense purposes against the police and other alleged white racists.
The NEJM article doesn't break down the statistics by age -- i.e., and e.g., there is no breakdown for 5-6 year olds versus 18-19 year olds, who are considered adult in the US. That is an odd omission as the data clearly exists. In fact, the whole category 1-19 is an odd grouping, and seems designed to suggest higher numbers of child victims, when the likelihood is that most were adults (18-19).
The timing of the article with the Uvalde tragedy is likely an attempt to pretend that increasing gun deaths for children is because of random school shootings, but those numbers are a very small percentage (probably 1%) of the totals. But the racial statistics show this is what it has always been -- gang violence in black neighborhoods. Many gun regulations have been specifically aimed at that problem, but none seem to have had much effect. Furthermore, society doesn't seem to care. Liberals try to ignore statistics on gang violence in black neighborhoods because it contradicts other exaggerated causes of theirs, and many conservatives don't mind when one gang member (presumptive criminal) shoots another.

Deno, you're right. But it's also important to see that we have a long history of permitting sensible gun regulations on the local and state level, going back to revolutionary days. A gun historian talked about the extraordinary prevalence of such regulations. The second amendment, after all, begins with the key term, 'a well-regulated militia.' Regulations are fundamental to the Second Amendment, and they were always taken as such by the Courts until recently.
