Centro has knee surgery won’t be running for at least another 3 months

The guy was top ten at NCAA XC. He's always been a 15/5 type.

A little confused by his post, did he get his ACL reconstructed too? or was it just meniscectomy/meniscus repair? 3 months to return to running is pretty fast for normal people but I guess he is an elite athlete with elite athlete resources. Curious how he got this knee injury... I know he likes to ball every once in a while maybe it was a bad land during a basketball game.

A good point of comparison would be Abby D'Agostino/Cooper who famously tore her ACL/meniscus during the Rio olympics. She came back just fine and had that great solo performance to reach the qualifying standard during trials last year. Would worry more about long term arthritis with high mileage training on a reduced meniscus, but hopefully he has a good team around him to watch out for that.

Was just going to say the same thing.... I dont get why he mentioned the ACL? Doesnt sound like that ended up being an issue and it was just a meniscus? Was he saying he wouldnt have needed surgery/to take time off if they didnt need to make sure it wasnt an ACL?

Exactly. A 15/5 guy has to be at his best possible 1500m shape. John Walker was also maybe past his prime in the 1500m in 1984 and he got dropped in the 5000m. He later said that he wished he had run the 1500m instead.

An AR attempt fallen WAY FLAT. A whole second better than his 3:50 at the Olympics. Put a fork in him.

Centro might still factor on a domestic level as far as advancing to world teams for maybe a year or two, but his days of being competitive for medals let alone making world finals are behind him (at least in the 1500). A lot of young talent in the pool of American milers right now so it should be excited to see which one(s) rise to the occasion to fill these big shoes. I think its very likely the US has a legit medal contender in Paris at 1500.

When did you get so old?

He will have a hard time catching Cooper and Hocker, but the ACL is definitely something you can fully recover from as a runner. I partially tore mine and I've run over 15k miles since then with no issues.

Matthew will be 33 in October. Obviously he has no future at the top at 1500m. He will likely dabble in the 1500m and 5000m until he realizes the writing is on the wall, although some of us can already see it. A tremendous career Matthew but…get healthy and then your move #Centro.

Awesome Career. Makes you realize how special guys like Lagat and Meb were, still running close to their peak into their late 30's.

But of course Lagat did not necessarily come close to his peak in his late 30s. He did run 3:33 at age 36 BUT he was a 3:26 guy at his peak. He did run 12:53 at age 36 which is where you do have a point for sure but we will never know what he could have done at age 28, for example, if he had been focused on the 5000m.

I hope you understand how dumb this sounds to those of us who are educated.
an ACL injury for a runner is a not a problem at all. If he was a football or basketball player, this may be a career ending injury. However, the ACL is a minimal factor for people running in straight lines/slight left turns.
the only thing hurting Centro’s return is his age.

Whether or not Lagat was near his peak physical condition in his late 30s, he could close a 5000m in 25 seconds at age 41 to beat all other Americans. It's not like competitive runners should quit only because they've declined some amount.

Keep wishing. Centro is never beating Teare in any event ever again. Hocker and Nur are only getting faster, not slower. If Nuguse goes all in on the 1500 as a pro and Kessler reemerges, an 85% Centro can still snag a team spot--on the couch in the USA Hype House.

He should’ve done it in 2020 prepping for last year. He has run 13:00.

So he never actually intended on running the Bowerman Mile. Just another Nike ploy to sell tickets.

Eh, the only issue is they usually use a hamstring tendon for the ACL repair, which can impact speed. Not an issue for distance runners but may affect top end speed.
