Yeah, I’m all honesty I just decided I wanted to be an 800m runner around a month ago and my top end speed sucks. I was running around 18:30 5k in high school with a 4:40ish 1500m and 2:17 800m. I constantly struggles with injury in high school so I quit running when I started uni and started to lift. A year later, I randomly went for a run one day because my abs weren’t showing anymore and I ended up easily running a 19:30, I thought that was pretty fast so I decided to take up running again. At first it was just complementing my lifting, but suddenly I was hitting all of these pbs and was down to around 16:30ish within 6 months. I got mono and was in bed for a week and couldn’t swallow anything (didn’t eat and barely drank anything the whole week). That caused my 5k to go back to 19 minutes ish. Then I made the decision to focus on running and did around 1 long run and 3 workouts a week with lifting around 5 days a week. I would say the best workout that got me to where I’m at would definetely be my fartlek sessions. I feel the best workout that worked for me was 10x (75 second 400m - 1min 40second 400m recovery) on the track. 2 months ago I asked what time I would need to run to get into varsity and the coach said I would need under 15 minutes 5k minimum to be considered a walk on and did not mention what time I would need for a scholarship (I have a 3.85gpa if that matters). I then remembered I was a much better 800m runner so I thought about training for that instead. I also really want to be a 800m runner so I can continue lifting and actually make some gains. I realized that my natural speed is completely gone. I sprinted a lot because I liked playing other sports other than running and could run around a 12.6-12.8ish 100m. I recently hand timed my 100m right now and it’s around 13.6ish. I feel with a little speed stuff I could probably be a world class 800m runner so I am currently training for it. I am aiming for mid 1:50s before summer ends so I can join varsity and then low 1:50s for next year so I can transfer or get a scholarship.
8/10, I’d say. If by some miracle you are real and really do want a scholarship, train for the 5,000, and give up the excessive lifting. You are aerobically talented, but the idea you are going to be running 1:52 for the 800 is absurd.
