I'm so sad to hear that. I'm old enough to remember him first as a runner, then as a runner who wrote about his running experiences as well as any runner has, then as just a very good writer. I also liked him in "Personal Best." A great loss to the running and writing communities.
One of my favorite runners and authors. I had been alerted this day was near.
3 times I had the good fortune to go to gatherings at his Eugene home. I will never forget the wonderful memories of those days.
Very sad news.
What got him?
In 1973 I ran the Florida Relays. I made sure I came back home with one of those Florida Track Club running tops. Because Kenny, Shorter, and Galloway and company were bad ass.

He was on the press truck at the 1988 Mens Marathon Olympic Trials that I had wrangled myself onto. At a certain point he went from left to right, gave a brief bio on each of the 12 - 15 runners in the lead pack. His knowledge was encyclopedic, and many of the writers held their mics up towards him and recorded his every word for their background stuff. Now they could google it I guess, but probably not as efficiently as by listening to Kenny speak.
And no offense to anyone, but he was probably the best writer on that truck. Sorry to hear of his passing.
His Sports Illustrated articles were so wonderfully well written. RIP
I have a signed copy of Best Efforts in my running library. Moore's writing was quite good. I wish I would have been alive to see him run in person. Sad news indeed.
Kenny signed a copy of his book best efforts for me 10 years ago that I bought from his website. Sadly it got lost by the post office when I moved. He was a great writer. I've ready many of his past articles which can be found in the Sports Illustrated Vault online. Many younger runners today won't know so much about him but he was a great runner and writer. He loved the sport and had insightful things to say about it and its competitors. RIP Kenny.

I am telling you God is the best Coach and he has Jesus as a great assistant and with the generations that started the running boom moving on to heaven. The team up in the sky is running strong and painless through the suffering of those in there footsteps on the track. I would guess he is running a 100 miler with Pre as he has waited generations to run with Kenny once again.

The late Great Mark Conover was one of those hero's who we sadly lost a month ago :(
Deepest condolences to Kenny's friends and family. Everything he did radiated fierceness, gentleness, kindness and humor. Nobody has ever written with such understanding, passion and lyricism about our sport. I have been a runner for forty-five years and a writer for thirty. Kenny Moore has been my polestar for half a lifetime. Thanks, Kenny, and rest well.
He had a cameo appearance in ‘Without Limits’, too.

I've known of Kenny Moore for most of the time I've been involved with running (almost 40 years) but I had no idea of his non-marathon accolades in track and cross country. What a badass. You learn something new every day.
If you run, and you write or read good writing, Kenny was the gold standard -- again no offense to others with a foot in both camps, but Kenny was special. I was privileged to be at Munich in'72 and, at the marathon start he was the picture of happy relaxation when everyone else was serious and tense. (Now I need to get those old 8mm movies digitized.) "The Long Blue Line" for SI is a must-read.
