Just do what I do man. Show up at 9am. Punch the clock. Take a two hour lunch at home with a nap. Punch out at 4. Figuratively of course. No one gives a sh!t when I’m actually there. Take the summers essentially off…definitely don’t bother with a camp. Take a month off over the holidays. I do whatever my “DI athletes” tell me to do and everyone is happy. We’re not very good of course…but I do my actual job - what the profession is - very well. Rave reviews from admin & athletes alike. And we’re always bottom 3rd of the conference. Fuk it man. Just give’em what they want. I used to be very competitive & hard working but the “athletes” made me miserable. I’ve never been happier since I gave up.

In the UK the vast vast majority is voluntary.
As the hassle and controls and definitions of risk change good coaches have given up as just not worth it.

I've spent the last 10 or so years establishing an alumni base where our athletes can get jobs and network, I've written at least 50-60 Letters of rec for athletes who have used those to get into med school- grad school- jobs- jobs well after graduation and more. I've spent countless hours supporting athletes who are in need of dire help financially as well as emotionally.... HOWEVER none of that was hard for me- it was the fulfilling part of the job. Yet. If the new job is bowing down to kids who don't really have problems...... but create their own.... and use that fakeness to stage a "MOVEMENT" well you win.... I'm not equipped and the next sucker should step right in.
that's a lot of "I" and 'me". You sound bitter and selfish, and seem to have forgotten that the coach is there to serve the athletes. They'll be better off without you.

I feel like this is hurtful. I'm not being supported for my feelings and aspirations of helping people. You all are NOT here for the athlete but you are here to hurt me and that is a sign that bullies have no place in this sport!!! Stop being mean and realize that my mental health matters! STOP OBJECTIVIFYING me!!!!

If you have been coaching that long, you know that it is not easy. There are beautiful highs, and dark lows.
When the net result is negative for you as a coach walk away. But do not blame it on the athletes, especially if it is "all" of them that are hopeless.
There will be other coaches that will step in and be equipped to handle the new wave. Those coaches will be able to steer success into what you label as weak minded, distracted, and lazy.
But it also just may be you growing stale or stuck in your ways. As long as I have coached, I can fall victim to myself at times. I have felt that the sky is falling, or even that my athletes are uncoachable. But often it helps me grow as a coach! It forces me to reflect and meet them where they are. Or it can make me realize that my path is correct and all the athlete needed was consistency from me.
You need to continue to grow as a coach. Grow your knowledge or the sport. Grow your understanding of the athletes you are coaching. Grow your patience in dealing with their BS. Grow your ability to discern when they need a heavy hand and when they need a trustworthy figure.
If any of that is beyond you, or you do not have the desire to do it, then walk away. Coaching is not glamorous and can be thankless to begin with. Maybe you just need a break to find the desire again. Even if it is just to guide those few on your team that truly want it.

I never labeled anyone as weak minded or lazy. Where did I say that? Also I have a GREAT relationship with about 85% of the kids.... it's the 15% who take control who have no desire to be good who only find ways to be important so they make fake LRC posts like this to make a difference.

10 years isn't that long to be doing something. Let's not pretend he's some Hall of Famer having trouble with the new generation; he's just not cut out to be around young athletes.

You're right. You did not specifically say weak or lazy.
What I meant was that you may label some as athletes that have no desire, or "take control", or are this/that. Being a coach for many years has provided me with the insight that some athletes (hs/college/pro) are difficult. You will not reach them all. Nor do you have to have the absolute best relationship with them all to help them as athletes.
If you have a team of 40, and 34 of them (85% by your estimation) are great then you are in a great position.
Simply put, if you are unwilling to deal with the remaining., find a way to build rapport/trust, or establish a culture, then you should move on. I bet at one point you were very successful at all of it. Times change and so do the athletes. But respect is constant. Yes, the younger gen may lack what previous generations labeled respect. Or have a far different modus operandi than before.
But a great coach knows when to be rigid, but also how to relate with the next gen

This dude is right… the good kids that want to be good will be good; just babysit the losers, keep them happy and let them do what they do and let the winners win. You only need one or two good kids to make the whole job fun.
Football if you have the best qb and a bunch of losers your team sucks… in track/xc you have one amazing kid and a bunch of losers and you get to have fun coaching a winner!

They pretty much have no athletic value anymore and want to gain value by "exposing the horrid nature of the sport!" which is sadly taking advantage of all the real problems out there.
It's too much to deal with. I mentored a former runner who is now a coach and he is part of the woke movement and sent me a text complaining about kids trying to get out of practice because of "weather" even though it was harmless. hahaha Anyway. I think I'd rather mow lawns and make more than this crappy job.
