Schools like Iona, Furman, Portland, Tulsa, etc put all their scholarships in to distance but they aren’t close to fully funded (have 12.6/18). Other schools claim to only have a couple distance scholarships but are either insanely cheap or give out favorable academic/need scholarships they’re able to combine with small athletic scholarships.
There is no athletic department that is putting all their money in any one thing lol. Not even football or basketball lol.
Some powerhouses (BYU for example) have incredible endowment and offer amazing scholarships simply for having a specific background. Add in football and basketball players who also do track and you get a lot of scholarship support so they don’t need to put up as much towards those events. (Oregon and Miami both do this)

Not unusual for teams to invest most of their scholarship money in distance if Cross Country is a priority, then recruit need-based athletes for sprints and jumps.

This is their huge advantage. Even if you had to borrow the money, graduating with only $32K in debt is a position that many would love to be in. Eyestone and Taylor can fill their rosters with loads of talented LDS kids at rock bottom prices.
