Peter Snell had some of the most massive calves I've ever seen on a world class runner. He was more of a sprinters build though and excelled in the 800m/mile

I had exceptionally large calve while competing. Later in life I had a hammer toe surgically repaired. The surgeon, also a runner said the inflexibility/tightness caused the size of my calves and that they were essentially pulling on my arch and toes. Only one bout of plantar fasciitis in my career.

You need smaller calves for distance running as it is not a power issue but an energy usage issue. Smaller calves are lighter, given that the lower leg does most of the swinging motion
Many top sprinters also have thinner calves, the weight advantage applies to sprints also.
