Do I think it's fair? Absolutely. I actually like this better than him leaving after the season because the recruits at least know who they are committing to. If he stays for two weeks and recruits kids, he's basically lying to them.

Plus 1) College kids can not get paid

2) College kids can now transfer.

SoCal has been losing top recruits to Oklahoma, that’s partly why USC knew which coach to swoop on.

1989 NCAA basketball tournament. Right before the tournament starts, Michigan’s head coach announces he will be going to Arizona State the next season. Michigan promptly fires him and makes the assistant coach the interim head coach. The new head coach tells his players to relax and just go out and play however they want for the sheer joy of playing.

The team, especially Glen Rice, goes on fire and Michigan, a 3 seed, wins the NCAA championship.

Well if they get paid then they pay for their tuition, etc.

Isn’t he just announcing he will be leaving? Text is kind of unprofessional to tell the team but overall what’s the problem here? If you leave your job for a better offer in any other profession no one bats an eye but when athletes and coaches do it it gets judged unfairly.

Good for him.

Definitely not fair. But life isn't. Also, they probably don't need him that badly.

If Bama and Ok St lose, this will probably be the scenario as well. I do not, however, think ND should be rewarded for not playing a conference championship.

Kelly is jumping from the frying pan into the fire. ND was a cushy gig relative to the SEC and the high expectations of LSU.

I literally had never heard of this coach and had no idea who he was before reading this thread. If there wasn't context given in the posts to indicate he was the Notre Dame football coach, I would have assumed this was a track coach (and been confused how a track coaching was making $100 million lol).

The odd time the coach knows he's going elsewhere but concels it until after his teams last game of the year too. Awful for the athletes. It happens now because it's before early signing day. They can call up all of the athletes they've been recruiting and tell them to switch and follow them to their new school.

people should be able to leave if they want to leave. right to work. life circumstances change, mental health changes, family have preferences, etc.

Sounds like ND is poised to promote the DC. That will likely retain much of the existing roster and recruits. In general players love the assistants, but don’t really care for the head coach.
