Cole Hocker and Hobbs Kessler are head-and-shoulders greater prospects than the Youngs though. Brandon Miller (for the 800) is next in line.

Then it's a large drop-off and the Youngs are in the mix.

The thread is about brothers and not individuals. Ryun was better than anyone else, but he didn't have brothers that competed.

The Youngs are not even the best runners on their HS team and now we want them to be the Ingebritsens! To challenge JI's WR they only have to shave 15 seconds off their prs!! No sweat. The Youngs are going to challenging JI's times right around the same time Mantz is challenging Kipchoge's.

You Americans all have undying hope. The Young brothers are not even close to the level of the Ingebrigtsens. None of them will ever run the 5K equivalent to 3:28 at 19, just f*cking move on.

interesting prediction given the twins are HS juniors and Nico is still under 20 years old. Nico might even break 13:20 this coming spring while his twin brothers will likely break 14 as hs juniors. I agree they may never attain the speed of a McGorty (who wasnt as good as any of the Youngs in hs) but to write these kids off is a bit much.

Predicting that any young American will run 13:06 is very unlikely. Yet you think that is writing somebody off?

More important than time will be if he and his brothers can make teams. The Ingrebridstens all had major runs in World/Olympics finals.

13:06 makes you a contender to make a team, but the Norwegian brothers are contending for top 3 in the World not top 3 in America. So, the Youngs have promise but it's worth noting Nico will need a solid breakthrough, and one of the younger brothers will have to have a huge Kessler-esque type breakthrough if you want to make any comp to Jakob who is a teen phenom in line with Jacob Kiplimo, Joshua Cheptegei, Bekele, Barega and so on. Anyhow, hopefully they all progress and have good careers.

The word has meaning. I don't question predictions. You can predict that he will break 13 this year and I wouldn't question that but you instead said that it is iikely. That is a different thing.

It's far from being a sure thing that an outstanding runner will have brothers with similar ability. Bill McChesney was close to being world class but Steve (9:04) and Tom (8:53) didn't accomplish much at Oregon. A third brother, Ken, ran 9:30 (?). The was a big gap in talent between the Torres twins.

I'd say between Brandon McGorty @ 1:48 in the 800 and Sean @ 13:06 for 5k, the Young's have there work cut out for themselves to compare.

So far, Nico is a very fast kid out of HS who is notably underperforming so far in College.

Compared to say, Adam Goucher, who was not as talented out of HS, Nico has not shown the competitive drive equal to the greats before him. Nico should be the best on his team and should be actually winning more races.

Seen through neutral glasses from the other side of the Atlantic I don´t think the comparison is so bad as many Americans ?! on this thread think.

Regarding Nico vs Henrik:

Nico is actually superior to Henrik in the same age.

Nico 3:44.47 to henrik´s 3:44.53 in the 1500m at 18 (and the 1500m is not Nico´s best event).

Nico 7:57 in the indoor 3000m at 17: Henrik 7:56 at 22!

Nico 13:24 at the 5000m at 18; Henrik 14:19 at 22! and 13:27 at 24!

So Nico is clearly superior to Henrik in the same age. Filip is slower than Henrik (Filip first started training seriously in his mid teens).

Nico´s level in general:

Is VERY high. Only one youngster outside Africa has run faster than Nico´s 13:24 in the 5000m at 18. I can´t understand why people here are denigrating Nico and some predicting he won´t break 13:10.

I would predict that he with a normal progression would be able to break 13 in some few years. Justyn Knight made a big jumb this year when in his mid twenties; why shouldn´t Nico be able to make some similar jumbs from age 18.

Nico´s recent "disappointment" in the 10km cross country. I think Nico run an OK run. As far as I understand Conner Mantz ran a big course record. I suppose that means Nico would have been in the very top/ the winner in earlier races. That isn´t so bad.

The problem by comparing the Youngs to the Ingebrigtsens is in relation to Jakob who will be very difficult to beat by both Nico and by Leo and Lex. But remember: Jakob is even more superior to his own older brothers so it should be possible for the Youngs to be better or at least at the same level as Henrik and Filip.

I will bet that Nico will have a better PB in the 5000m than Henrik and Filip before 2024.

For every example that runs sub 13:10, there are 5 who did not. It is more likely that he doesn't break 13:10 than he does. If anyone here wants to bet that all 3 Youngs break 13:10, I will be any amount of money up to $100k that not all 3 will do it.

...But what about results based on winning?

PRs are neat and all and obviously Nico can run fast 2m - 10k, but what are we talking about if he isn't winning races? Ingebrigstens care about PRs too, but winning is always most important.

Ed Cheserek was the most dominant NCAA runner, impressing with both PRs AND lots of wins.

Adam Goucher had less talent than both but had Pre-like determination to win and did.

Nico is 11th best in xc currently and has some very notable competition ahead of him.

Let's let him show he can be competitive with them before ordaining him and his brothers as the US version of the Ingebrigstens
