Did we forget that Michael Phelps did his Rio training against Michigan students beating them in practice?
Here's my main gripe. The community that supports the rant against Centrowitz by Teare would rather decide that at 30, Centrowitz may as well pack his things and go home.
What they forget is that Centro is still part of an elite running community and has every right to do what it takes to get there.
The implication is that somehow, at 30, Centrowitz needs to be deferential and take his licks and lose to college kids because the college kids in the B heat are more deserving than Centro.
If someone in the B heat is more deserving than Centro, they would beat Centro.
At the end of the day, Matt Centrowitz has his own running career to still regard, and it can't be feasible in any other way.
Otherwise, no former medalist or athlete beyond 30 should ever compete in a B heat because they might beat a promising youngster.

In the interview teare says he’s a 13:01 guy he should be in the A heat, it’s not that Cole is more deserving he even said Cole was probably going to win until Centro signed up

If you don’t see why an Olympic champion and one of the fastest 5k runners in American history is getting flack for racing in the B heat, then bragging about it on Instagram after barely beating a 19 yo kid and running 30 seconds off his PR, I can’t help you.

Come on, dude. Nobody said that. Try reading people’s responses a little more next time.
As a whole Centro is pretty popular on Letsrun and as the only US distance runner to win an Olympic gold in decades, we’re all rooting for him. He’s only 30, he ran 13:00 a year ago, and I don’t believe that he’s been seriously injured since (although I could be wrong). He obviously has the potential to come back. It’s just that many people here have an issue with him running in the slow heat and then bragging about his victory. If he really wanted to show that he can get back to his previous form, he would be racing in the A heat, maybe taking a loss but overall becoming a better runner. Instead, he’s taking easy wins for the ego stroke.

A 1st in the B heat still makes people wonder.

You didn’t even know Centro’s 5k PR was from last year so let’s not pretend you don’t need help. It’s irrelevant that he wasn’t in top form for this meet. That doesn’t give him a free pass to protect his ego by running in the B heat like the little coward that he is. The fact that he only won by 3 hundredths is EMBARRASSING.
He should have run in the top heat and taken the loss. It’s still early and he’s obviously not in peak shape so it would have meant absolutely nothing, just as his B heat win (which you seem to think is important) means nothing.

Why are you under the impression that this was some kind of qualifying meet where placement within heat was of utmost importance. Do you even follow the sport at all?

Yeah, I’m sure a dude who ran 13:00 last year needed to beat a bunch of college kids and win his heat at a random meet in order to validate himself.
Please read the December 3 letsrun article about "The Track Meet" with the results. In the first paragraphs, this should help as to the logic of Centro.

Better to lose in the top heat where he belongs than to win the B heat and dodge all of the top guys. This early in his training cycle, no one with any sense would be concerned to see him lose to the top college guys in the country who were peaking for that meet. His 13:00 from last year doesn’t magically disappear if he doesn’t win his heat.

One other thing, it’s absolutely laughable that you think the reigning Olympic champion at 1500m, who also happens to be one of the fastest American 5k runners of all time, would somehow lose relevance or status by losing to a few guys in his first race of the season. How someone could be a fan of the sport for “decades” and still be this dumb I don’t know.
