Maybe Genzebe is looking at the 5k/10k Olympic double. She’ll turn 30 next month (Tirunesh had made her marathon debut by this age) and is already 5+ years removed from that supercharged 3:50.07. Training for the 1500 hadn’t necessarily been working, since she’s missed significant time and opportunities to injuries. We don’t think of Genzebe as a 10,000m runner, but with 14:15/65:18 PBs and her championship 1500 experience why couldn’t she medal?
If she’s healthy, I think her chances of medaling (and her chances at gold) are pretty similar between the 1500 and 10,000 at this point—but targeting the 10k might increase her chances of staying healthy. Also, the 5k/10k double seems to work well for people, and it must be preferable to run a one-and-done 10k final than three 1500s when you’re contesting multiple events.
Genzebe for 10k bronze (and 4th in the 5k), you heard it here first.
