2023 Herculis -- Monaco Diamond League

2023 Kenyan trials steeplechase champion, Simon Koech, showed he belonged as he dominated his first ever Diamond League. Koech lowered his PB by 14 seconds from 8:18 to 8:04. He is definitely a medal contender this year in Budapest, with his 8:04 being the 3rd fastest time in the world this year. Further back in the field, Americans Anthony Rotich and Mason Ferlic set new PBs of 8:13 and 8:16 respectively. Finally, Geordie Beamish of the OAC and New Zealand set an Oceania record in just his first season in the steeplechase, running 8:13.26. 

Surely Jacob Kiplimo (12:41), Berihu Aregawi (12:40) or Mo Katir would win this one right? Nope, Hagos Gebrhiwet got the big win over Aregawi in 12:42 as six guys went under 12:50. American Cooper Teare went for it, hitting 3k in 7:45 (12:56 pace) but faded badly and would finish 13th in 13:19.

This may have been her best one yet!! Everyone in the race behind her set a PB except for one person.

Marco Arop went out super fast but got caught by Kinyamal. Clayton Murphy was terrible over the final 200.

Wycliffe Kinyamal got the world leading win in 1:43.22, his sixth Diamond League win ever and first since 2021. Marco Arop was the only guy willing to go witht the rabbit through 49.06 and led around the final turn where Kinyamal was the only guy to bridge the gap. Kinyamal then powered away for the win as Slimane Moula was second and Arop held on for third

Americans Bryce Hoppel and Clayton Murphy were 6th adn 10th as the biggest surprise was the undefeated Emmanuel Wanyonyi only finishing 8th.

Niels Laros, the Dutch teen sensation, whowas a guest on the LetsRun.com podcast earlier this year ran a huge PB of 1:44.78 in the "B" race before the TV window.

With SML dropping out earlier today, the women's 400m seemed open for the taking. The 2022 World Championship bronze medalist and Commonwealth Games champion Sada Williams of Barbados took the first 200m out very hard, but faded in the second half with Shamier Little looking like she would take the win. In fact, Steve Cram even announced on the Peacock broadcast that Shamier Little took the win. However, in the final 5 meters, Kaczmarek overtook the 400m hurdler with a huge burst to make it two straight Diamond League wins for the Pole. 

Alison dos Santos tried to keep it close and was about half a stride down at 200m, but Warholm is in incredible form right now and dos Santos was not strong enough to keep it going in the home straight. Warholm's 46.51 is his second Diamond League record of the year and the second-fastest of his life after his 45.94 WR. dos Santos was 2nd in 47.66 and has four weeks go close that gap before Worlds.

The TV window is now on 2-4pm on Peacock in USA but before the TV window Larissa Iapichino of Italy won the long jump with a 6.95 PB in the final round to defeat Tara David-Woodhall.
