Get Your Butt Up To Canada - June 13th & 14th For the Mercedes Benz Classic Mile and The LetsRun.com Old School Collegiate Mile With track and field, we often are pleading for a return to the old school. mentality - a return to the basics. Well does it get any more than a sub-4 full mile on a cinder track? We don't think so. For the last three years, our Canadian friends have been hard working on a great event. The Mercedes Benz Classic Mile. The main event is a professional mile run on a cinder track. It's a race we are proud of as they don't pay appearance fees and winning matters. If the winner breaks four (4:30 women), they get a two-year lease on a Mercedes. Oh yeah and there are no rabbits. The runners have to do it themselves. How great is that? Well the mile has been getting bigger and bigger and the whole thing has turned into a big festival. There are races for people of all ages (including a corporate challenge and college alumni challenge), a 5k, lots of music (including a 27 piece band) and of course the real attraction - a beer garden (drinking age is 19). The organizers are trying to make the event bigger and better each year and this year they are adding a collegiate mile to the event. We agreed to help get the word out and in return they are naming the Collegiate mile in our honor - the LetsRun.com Old School Collegiate Mile. The goal is to get as many college runners up to Cambridge, Ontario (near Toronto, 3 hours from Detroit, 1:30 from Buffalo, map here) as possible to experience the great event. Meet people from all over the world, experience a cinder track, watch a professional mile and have a great time early in the summer. The college mile is set for Friday, June 13th. The plan is to run heats of the mile on Friday and then have a college mile final on Saturday, June 14th - before the professional mile. Now, it doesn't really matter if you are a real good miler or not. They just want people experiencing the event. Considering that NCAAs are that same weekend, we know there aren't going to be a lot of 4:02 college types entering. If you are a D3 guy or girl or a 4:25 miler or a 10ker who is a month into his summer training, they still want you. You may react to the cinder track better than most. Just get up there and experience the event. There is a 5k as well but we are trying to get people to run a mile on a cinder track. Some of you may not even need to read about the history of the event. If you want to sign up, please click here, http://www.events.runningroom.com/site/?raceId=3774. If you need more info about the college mile, please email the race organizers at classic_mile@hotmail.com . The History Of The Event We contacted Roger Bannister in 2004 upon the
50th anniversary of the 4:00 mile and let Sir Roger know that we were creating
an event that would pay tribute to his "old school" accomplishments. The
event was announced in Canada's parliament and we started the tradition know as
the Classic Mile.
In 2005 Laban Rotich touched down in Canada
and ran a 3:58.9 and for his efforts earned the keys to a new car.
Rotich returned in 2006 and was joined by Cambridge
native Nate Brannen. Due to cold and windy conditions, the car
was safe but a Brannen and Rotich were just 1/100th of a second apart
at the finish. Carmen Douma-Hussar won the elite women's
mile in 2006.
In 2007 Shedrack Korir ran a spectacular
3:56.05 on the Clay and earned the largest prize ever awarded in Canadian middle
distance running - a Mercedes-Benz B200 valued at more than
$31,000. In the elite women's field, Megan Brown narrowly defeated
Megan Metcalfe in a photo finish.
For 2008 the organizers have added a collegiate
mile and we are looking to attract any
collegiate runner that wishes to share in the unique spirit of the
Classic Mile. A few traditions include:
