LetsRun.com 2007 NCAA Cross Country Polls Oregon and Stanford #1 Heading into Crucial Conference Action

The Stanford women and Oregon men sit comfortably atop the 2007 LetsRun.com NCAA XC Polls heading into this weekend's crucial conference action. Casual fans often put their attention on the NCAA national meet, but for most coaches and athletes , he most important weekend of their season and careers is this one when the conference titles are decided.

#4 Northern Arizona (NAU) and #5 UTEP won the Pre-NCAA races and were the big movers in the men's poll although neither moved up enough to supplant Colorado or Wisconsin from the #2 and #3 spots. LetsRun.com fans no doubt are supporting the past history of success Colorado and Wisconsin have had at nationals over the last decade.

LetsRun.com visitors apparently do know their stuff as they anticipated NAU's strength more so than the coaches themselves.  The coaches were late jumping on the NAU bandwagon as they only had NAU, which didn't qualify for NCAAs in 2006, at #15 in their poll prior to Prenats while NAU was already in the top 10 at #9 in the LetsRun.com poll.  To see the previous Letsrun.com poll, click here. Women: Stanford Strong #1, Princeton Moves Up to #2
On the women's side of things, #2 Princeton was the big winner after its surprising pre NCAA win. They share the #2 spot with perennial power Colorado. Peter Tegen's Stanford squad however is a strong #1, and the two time defending champs will have to suffer an injury or two or have a huge meltdown at nationals in order to not get the three peat.

Arkansas Men Going for 34th Straight Conference Crown
Ever since LetsRun.com co-founders Rojo and Wejo celebrated their first birthday, John McDonnell's Arkansas Razorbacks have won their conference championship (33 in a row), in one of the most remarkable streaks in the history of the sport. Some think this is an off year for the Razorbacks (they are only #7 in the LetsRun.com polls), but they are heavy favorites to get their 34th straight crown.

Mark Wetmore's Colorado Buffaloes have some pretty impressive streaks of their own going. His men's teams have won every Big 12 Cross Country title in the history of the league (11 straight). His women have won 8 in a row. Don't expect anything to change Friday in Lubbock, Texas.

Jerry Schumacher's Wisconsin Badgers have a nice little streak of their own going, eight straight conference titles. Some message boarders are saying Michigan could pull the upset at Ohio State this weekend and stop the Badgers streak. But as one message boarder put it, it's unlikely: "Jerry (Schumacher) should say, we have twice as many talented runners out of high school than any other team in the Big 10 and will dominate this Sunday as such." (Schumacher talked about his young squad with the media on Monday here)

The LetsRun.com national and conference polls for October 24, 2007 appear below. It should be a great weekend for thousands of cross country fans this weekend.
