Casey Combest (aka the Great White Hope)'s Comeback is Underway Normally indoor track in December is pretty boring. In fact, we've often wondered if indoor track should even be allowed in December. But this year things may be a bit different. Tomorrow in Normal, Illinois Casey Combest will be running the 60m at the Red Bird Open Meet at Illinois State. Who the hell Casey Combest? He's the fastest American high schooler ever at 60m. And oh yeah, he's white. Back in 1999, Combest ran a 6.57 60m while in high school. Then he fell off the map. His scholarship to run at the University of Kentucky didn't pan out because Combest didn't qualify academically. Then he got busted for selling marijuana. Combest briefly ran at a junior college in Alabama, Wallace State. Believe it or not his teammate at Wallace State was Obea Moore. (Moore ran a 45.14 ran as a SOPHOMORE IN HIGH SCHOOL and then fell off the map like Combest. For an excellent profile on Moore click here. (And with all the talk of whether anyone in the NFL could go sub 10 in the 2 mile, this thread claims Moore did it)) But then Combest vanished from the track and field scene and people began to wonder what ever happened to Casey Combest (here and here). Combest was more concerned with other things like working than track and field. He eventually started his own janitorial business and began a real comeback in earnest this past spring (enough of a comeback to get mention in the Kentucky newspaper here) The comeback is serious enough that Combest is talking about running very fast. "Id like to run in the 6.5 or 6.6 range. I wont be disappointed if I run 6.7" Considering, Combest's national record of 6.57 usually will put someone in the top 10 in the US each year, we'd be shocked if he runs 6.5. Tyson Gay ran a junior college record as a freshman and only ran 6.65. That shows how damn good Combest was at the 60 in high school. And in case you're wondering no white man has ever broken 10 seconds for 100m.
