The Preview of The Grote Poll Preview
by: Ryan Grote
August 25, 2005
(editor's note: prior to LetsRun.com and just before the dark ages there was TNFMedia.com, which was run by John Schiefer and
Ryan Grote (a national class runner). One of the highlights of TNFMedia was the Grote Poll were Grote, an NCAA XC qualifier himself, analyzed the NCAA field in his every humorous style.  We're glad that Grote in bringing back the Grote poll this year on LetsRun.com. If the preview of the preview is any indication, you will be entertained to say the least).

A timely prelude to the preview for the most self-absorbed, self-important, uninformed biased, irrelevant, and dreaded-to-be returning piece of internet running drivel in internet running garbage talk history.  Speaking of history, I believe this to be the 10-year anniversary of The Grote Poll!  Where's Schiefer???  Its back…or at least it will be.  Where has it been?  And who cares?  How old am I now and don't I have anything better to do?  31 and apparently not.  Is this the best that I can do with my BS B.A. in English?  Apparently so.  What else is new with the author that could be used as message board fodder?  I competed in triathlons as a “pro” for a few years…have at it, I deserve it.  Not once did I ever wear a speedo, not even in the pool.  I really do not miss the pool. I have a varicose vein on the back of my left calf that is the size of an average size watermelon.  Its gross, but it doesn't hurt and hasn't blown up yet.  If it did, there would be quite a mess.  What does this have to do with anything?  Nothing.  I've been married for 5 years now.  I feel sorry for my Wife.  We live in Bernardsville, less than a mile away from The Wall at Bernards HS.  We have another Weimaraner named Toby.  We gave away our first Gervin because he was insane, which didn't mix well with me being insane.  Toby is much nicer.

More to the point of the issue at hand, the Grote Poll Top 31 ranking the best teams in NCAA Men's Division 1 cross-country.  Will I really swear in the Grote Poll?  No.  Why?  Because I am coaching at a small, private high school in NJ, Gill St. Bernard's.  This is not to be confused with my alma mater, Bernards, which is also the alma mater of one Mark Wetmore, among others, but it is the same Gill St. Bernard's which produced an athlete who is a frosh on the same Wetmore's squad at Colorado.  Gill St. Bernard's is about 8 miles from just regular Bernards.  There is a connection.  There will be a bias.  I still don't like Stanford, but that may change depending on who is named the new coach.  I came to the conclusion upon deep, dumb thought that my problem with Stanford was not anything related to Vin, so I don't hate Oregon any more or less than I ever did.  Go Pilots.

The Grote Poll will become a weekly deal by October, ranking The Top 31 teams, as they project based on auto's in each region and at-larges.  Therefore, the perceived best 31 teams may not always be in The Grote Poll Top 31.  Why?  Do the math.  Take the West Region, which is strong as always.  Portland, Oregon (boo), Stanford (bigger boo), Cal Poly, Arizona, Arizona State, and Washington all are very good, legitimate NCAA top 20 contenders.  Will they all make it?  We'll see.  There will also be deeper looks at each respective region and the individual scene.  No offense to Simon Bairu, but when is the last time that a returning champion has not been a strong favorite to repeat?  I may not pick Bairu as the #1 guy on his team.  Withrow is that good.  ‘Zona's Cheseret is potentially good enough to demolish everybody.  Many others have a shot at the win, another Badger, a few Buffs, and…I won't get into the whole Rupp thing or how in the world he's eligible.  One question though, if Phil Knight wants a better football team, will he insist the entire roster of the Ducks be swapped with that of USC this year???  Or can LeBron James and Kevin Garnett pay back their pro bucks and hoop it up for the Ducks?

There are still some questions and rumors to be settled regarding some coaching situations, namely that at Stanford.  I will speak to the Jason Vigilante issue, which I am sure he, his Wife, and his young boys will appreciate.  Did he interview?  Yes.  Will he be the coach there?  No.  Does this make me happy?  Yes because I really do hate Stanford and I really do like Coach Vig and that would have been a problem.  I can't not hate Stanford.  It's not a healthy mindset, but so it goes.  He'll stay at Texas and they will have success…expect a top 10 in the Grote Poll Preview.  Here's the scoop with the Stanford job and Vig…lots of things went the wrong way.  First off, they were willing to overlook the NC State degree, but then he spelled Stanford the following way:  Stanfurd, and wrote the “N” backwards like a 1st grader.  They told him that was wrong, and he said “Ain't nuthin' wrong with that in Raleigh or Austin” and spit some chew into a cup.  Disclaimer:  For those new to The Grote Poll, I've known Coach Vig for years, don't take this too seriously.  The next issue was the tree, they insisted on belittling him by making him dance around as the mascot at football games in the tree costume.  No chance.  Then the issue of assistant coaches; Coach Vig wanted to bring a guy in that he knew as coach of the Charlotte Hornets from his year at UNC-Charlotte…DICK HARTER.  What in the name of all that is holy am I talking about?  Its pure nonsense and jibberish, but say it out loud:  DICK HARTER (insert Beavis and Butt-head laugh here).  You see, Dick Harter could have assisted coach Vig, and (get ready for a big play on words here) and headed up the new Farm Team…sponsored by Cialis…coached by Dick Harter.  You see, Coach Vig knows this guy who wrote a few books and sells for a pharmaceutical company…oh the irony.  Isn't it great how all these things work out.  Actually none of it worked out, Coach Vig remains in Austin, which really means all is still right in the world, Stanford still sucks, and I'm still a choad.

The Grote Poll Preview comes in a few more weeks....
