NCAA Day 4 On Site Coverage
June 12, 2004
Day 4 Distance Recap here

Women's 4*400
Exciting finish. LSU was 6 points back of UCLA in the team title.  LSU won the race buy UCLA's anchor passed a couple people the final 100m to get UCLA 4th place and the team title by 1 point. The Texas team fell on the first exchange and did not win as expected.
LSU ended up losing the meet by getting Texas DQd in the 4*100 which put UCLA in the final of the 4*100 which they went on to finish 2nd in. Without Texas being DQd, UCLA would not have made the final.

Men's 4*400
This was an exciting race as expected. Early leader Arizona State dropped the baton at the 2nd exchange. 400m champ Jeremy Wariner ran a superb 3rd leg to give the Bears the lead and they held off Minnesota on the final lap for the win.

Women's 400m Hurdles
Sheena Johnson blew away the field running 53.54 which is a collegiate record for an athlete still competing for their school. Lashinda Demus of USC ran 54.22 a personal best but it was only good for 2nd on this day.

Men's 400m Hurdles
NCAA leader Keron Clement got the win in a slow 49.05.

Women's 400m
Dee Dee Trotter of Tennessee got the surprise victory (50.32) over pre race favorite Sanya Richards who was running in front of the home crowd. Richards faded the final 20 meters and ended up 3rd in 50.68. Trotter started out slow but closed great.
She said, "I actually felt really good when I was out of the race a little bit at the 200-meter mark. I kept thinking that I didn’t know if I could catch up, but I just kept running and ran it all the way into the line. I was almost surprised at the line because I was so far behind earlier in the race. I surprised myself that I caught up in time and passed (Texas’ Sanya Richards and Monique Henderson of UCLA).”

Men's 400m
This was an extremely deep and strong field, but Baylor's Jeremy Wariner had the most left the final 100m and won in 44.71. He said, “I’ve been working hard all season - last season, too. I wanted to win and I knew it wasn’t just going to be handed to me. I had to fight and I dug down deep at the end. God blessed me with the win today.
