Can you cross the line with just the peel? Does the banana have to be in original form? Is somewhere in between okay?

Only if the anchor runner eats part f the banana, then it is legal --- IAAF 453.7893 section c
Not legal to run with a banana as a baton
Is it literally me, or does this thread remind people of me.

Even if it is the proper baton dimensions?

How sad is it that a rule needs to be written for that? No one wants some sweaty dude handing him a half eaten banana.
Common sense is only the anchor leg can eat any part of the banana. B
The rules state that:
"1.34.2.2.11 - A relay win with a banana peel only counts as a win if, and only if, the entire relay team has consumed the requisite 40 bananas per day (All banana peels are counted and weighed pre relay to ensure the full count and weight of the bananas is accounted for.) Short of the full 40 bananas per day rule, the entire relay team is disqualified from any and all future banana relays for the remainder of the banana relay season if the banana relay is completed without a full banana."
I think it is a bit heavy handed, but we all need to stand up for clean sport despite our personal feelings regarding the 40 bananas per day rule.
Ask the Rockford Rams from 10 years ago:

WYOMING -- Twice this week the Hudsonville boys track team beat the team from Rockford.
The first time happened in a hard-fought O-K Red Conference dual that Hudsonville Eagles earned on Tuesday.
The second was given to Hudsonville on Saturday at the Frank Grimm Relays at Wyoming Park High School.
Heading into the second-to-last event of the meet, the 400-meter relay, the Rams had the lead and looked good to get a much-needed win.
But the Rockford 400 relay team of Kyle Cushman, Zach Breen, Jeremy Jones and Frank Heeringa saw a joke go too far when they used a banana instead of their baton in the race, and were disqualified for using an illegal baton.
That opened the door for Hudsonville, which won the 400 relay and the last event of the day, the 1,600 relay, to win the upper division with a score of 65 points, two points ahead of the runner-up Rams.
The Rockford 400 relay team took second, but saw all of its points erased for the disqualification.
"This is an embarrassment to this program and our school, and we can't afford giving a meet away like this," first-year Rockford coach Brent Cummings said. "Something like this puts a shadow on what we are trying to do here."
Hudsonville coach Chris Bolhuis was glad to see his team come away with the win, even though it came on peculiar circumstances.
"This is weird that they disqualified with a banana," Bolhuis said. "This is unexpected, because we had prom last night, so we didn't bring everybody. And the guys that did come, they performed with not a lot of sleep."

It's a little-known fact that conventional batons may also be eaten during the relay. It is seldom attempted.

Still wondering about this. The only baton related rules I've seen specify the dimensions of the baton. Presumably most bananas would be illegal as batons as a result of failing to meet these specifications. But if you had a banana that met the shape and size requirements, would that be legal?
Watch for peels.
Wonder if anyone has ever tried the Banana Bread mile. Similar rules to the "Beer Mile" but you have to eat a loaf of Banana Bread before every 1/4 mile. I guess we'd have to come to some sort of agreement on how big/small the loaf needs to be.
Small world, I remember that meet
Only if you are properly fueling before the race with a medium-sized meal of 20-30 bananas.
