I am a highschool junior, and ran a 5:14 as a sophomore last year. I started training again late January, and my first race is in a month. Yesterday I ran an indoor race and ran a 5:38. I did awful, I just didn’t feel like pushing myself and was not there mentally. But this time frustrates me greatly, considering I haven’t been slacking off and have been in the weight room almost everyday, and maybe doing 15-20 mpw with lots of speed work. I have never done speed work before 2018. I just recently started, because I always thought high mileage = faster but that is not the case for me. In the summer for July, I did over 50 mpw, and barely broke 19 in cross country with a 18:46. I was highly disappointed. And last year in track, I’d run 5:22-5:25 in the mile all the time , with my last race being 5:14. These times being so slow despite my relatively high mileage. So I started speed work. Lots of 8x400m repeat days. Lots of 4x800m repeat days. add in a few 3.5-4.5 mile runs. This is so frustrating. Why am I slower than ever? 5:38 is just embarrassing despite me not trying my best. All I want is to break 5 minutes. Do you guys think I can break it this season? In my 400 repeats, I’ve been running 80’s, and in my 800’s , I’ve been running 2:50. I know I’m better than this. Ive been wanting this time for too long and have done many impressive practice runs. Please someone help me and tell me what I’m doing wrong. I have a race next Sunday (another indoor) as well. Thank you.
