Is it possible to get enough in-race carbohydrates from just drinking Gatorade at every opportunity during a marathon or is it a good idea to carry one or two gels in my hand and use them during the second half?

I always take gels. I carry 4 but usually end up using only three. Some races now serve that "nuun" crap
instead of Gatorade/Powerade.
I would also recommend buying shorts with pockets for gels.

I always take gels. I like to race with what I trained with and I don't like to depend on the event organizers for anything but water.

1. I have always admired your handle.
2. This. I have the stomach of a water baloon with acid reflux, so I train with the same chews that I plan on racing with and only drink water from the race.
PS- I usually eat some solid food during a marathon. Currently on a Skratch Bar kick. High carb, low-ish sugar.
