I've tried to get my kids to read Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers: Story of Success. It is not a running book but the same principles apply to running and pretty much everything else. You need to run for a fairly long time to reach the heights of your potential. He claims people need to do something for 10,000 hours to be really great. 10,000 hours would be 10-13 years worth of running. No wonder so few make the elite level.
