Over the winter I plan on building up to 55-65 mpw, which is what I peaked at for cross over the summer. I usually do two workouts a week (Tuesday and Thursday) and a long run.
Would it be counterproductive to do a 20-30 minute tempo on Tuesday, and a 6-8 mile hilly "moderate" run where I go pretty hard up the hills at like a tempo pace effort (then back to normal/recovery pace for flat streches)?
I have two routes where I live where I can get 6-8 miles of about 4-6+ .3-.6mile hills.
Would doing these two workouts every week during my base phase along with my long run be too much to the strength side? I'm a middle distance guy with a good amount of natural speed. I don't really have to do much fast stuff to sharpen up early on. So I've found that working on lots of strength work during my base helps so much throughout the rest of the season.
Any feedback or suggestions is appreciated.
