tl;dr daddy issues
When Trump won the electoral college and many close people that I considered decent human beings voted for him, I really sought to understand the appeal and the personality and thought process of the person that we just voted to be president. I read and listened to quite a few interviews with the people that spent significant time around him to write a biography and did lots of interviews with Trump himself. After doing all that, I concluded that his behavior is not that complex and anything that he has done since becoming president is not all that surprising.
If a friend or family did the types of tweets that he did, they would be simply embarrassing themselves and we would hope that they stop. At the point that we grow out of the pettiness of adolescence, we realize such Internet insult battles are immature and a complete waste of our time as functioning adults. We should have better things to worry about than someone's off-hand opinion of us. But Trump never had to be held accountable for this type of behavior because of elitism and wealth.
Regarding the insecurity displayed in the tweets, you could boil it down to symptoms of untreated narcissistic personality disorder and he is really is that insecure. Or maybe he's just completely delusional regarding his self image and how others view him. Overall, I would not expect him to stop focusing on what the media says about him and painting himself as a victim and partaking in his idea of "fighting back". His supporters actually love this stuff because they distrust the monolithical MSM and love simply pissing off anti-Trumpers.
Also, women appear only useful for their looks to him and he clearly finds any women of intelligence, success, stature, or can do anything better than him to be intimidating. So he reduces them down to their looks, because that's his only useful purpose for women.
I'm not some professional psychiatrist, but I think it goes a little deeper than narcissism, insecurity, straight-up delusion. In his big speech at the RNC convention, he had a line something along the lines of "how proud my dad would be if he could see me now." Why would that even matter at this point in time? Bro, your dad died a couple decades ago, so why are you still worried about what he would think of your now and why did you care that much once you were older than 25, we have to live our lives for ourselves, not to make our daddy's proud, especailly many years after they died. Basically, the Donald never got the admiration and approval that he wanted from his dad, so he's been seeking it all these years trying to the biggest shot of all the big shots. Well, guess what, he is the biggest shot now, and it's still not enough, he still is super sensitive to criticism and needs more approval than the world can provide. Nothing is ever enough for him, Trump would run for Emperor of the World if he could. He's never had to mature beyond being a teenager because he didn't have to.
Fred Trump Sr. was tough on his kids, even Donald says that one of the most important things he learned from his dad is that you have to be tough and be a fighter. Well, Fred Trump Jr. died from the effects of alcoholism and you can bet that addiction was related to family relationships and his inability to meet the approval of Fred Trump Sr.. More and more, research is showing how much adverse childhood experiences influence addictions. From what I have read about that relationship, Fred Trump Jr. was no exception.
So to conclude my diatribe, the Donald desperately wants his daddy's approval, but he'll never get it, and the insecurity and delusion will stay with him until he dies because the man has no interest in introspection or self-reflection or any of those healthy behaviors that normal people like us must do to stay sane in this world. Don't expect a self-realization or pivot. His insanity has got him to this point, it works for him, he's got plenty of enablers, and he won't stop any time soon.
We have someone with the maturity level of a 12 year old as president.
Saying "But Hillary..." "But Obama..." etc. doesn't make Trump's behavior any better.
Another presidents have been nasty human beings too. But the media covered for them, and at the same time they themselves didn't necessarily brag about it much either. Here OTOH we have the perfect storm, allowing us to see the underside of a nasty. But we've become desensitized to that from so many Hollywood scandals in the last decades.
Do face-lifts really make you bleed? Shouldn't there be a malpractice angle?
No one elected Trump for his civility.
At least he got them to change the subject from Russia (which Podesta got hammered on).
Yes, it's not like Morning Joe has never called for Trump to removed from a distant psychological evaluation (even calling for overturning Goldwater Rule), mental illness, etc.
SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS
“If it happened in the previous administration, the type of attacks launched on this program, the things they say, utterly stupid, personality disorder, mentally ill, constant personality attacks, calling people liars to their faces on programs. They would have said no way, hold on. The president will not step back, he showed that, and that is exactly what it is.â€
Twice a week I sit thru Morning Joe for an hour while I ride a spin bike. I am a captive audience at the YMCA. The entire time since the election it is all negative Trump, nothing else. Most of it incredibly unfair and fake. So I think the Tweet was Bigly appropriate. He bitches can toss out crap but can't handle being roughed up a bit.

Actually Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough are. They've been ridiculing Trump non-stop...calling him Hitler, a facist, racist, sexist, a homophobe ... every name on the playground ... without doing any journalism at all.
It's nice to see Trump shove back. There's nothing wrong with plastic surgery. Insecure people never go to plastic surgeons do they?
Agree. I love to see him hit those jackwads where it hurts. They keep this up and Trump won't have any trouble at all in 2020.
He bitches. We use to call them pu$$ies. You can't even use that word any more. It might hurt someone's feelings.

I held my nose and voted for Trump because I think the leftists are destroying America.
I can simply not understand his lack of restraint. He ends up looking small and like an idiot.
I held my nose and voted for Hillary because I knew his character was not up to the job.
Nor his business acumen.
He's a narcissist and I think he has aspergers. If his dad hadn't handed him the money he never would have made it in corporate America. He is too self focused and has no self awareness.
I think he's mentally disabled.
A 4% decrease in participation rate. If these people still were counted as looking for work unemployment would be 8%. If Okun's law was applied to the Obama era, the US economy should have been growing 4/5% p.a. but he did 1.8% this shows the unemployment rate was a joke.
Brzezinski is a Trump hatefest, but he was stupid enough to fall into their trap.
I think by now America has recognized the liberal emotion machine for what it is: unsustainable. Trump is impetuous but he's also extremely calculated. He knew this would devour the air-time on a day the House moves two immigration bills through. He also delivered a big speech on energy reform today. And his travel ban went into effect! The liberals are going to be even more triggered when they realize they spent the day decrying "bleeding" and "face-lift," instead of decrying the actual agenda they hate most: on this day, cutting off funding to sanctuary cities and increasing penalties for deported illegals who try to return.
Not sure making fun of a woman's face lift is the route to go but I'm completely on board with our President going after the media who are controlled by democractic leaders. People like Clintons camp and wasserman-Schultz dictating what the media should and should not report. That same morning joe show Mika got an earful from Podesta for saying that Trump was smart for saying he gets as much taxes back as possible during one of the debates.
Now they have just a typical bashing liberal show just like the rest of them. They had a more legit show when they were more neutral.

The Left still found time to hyper-vent over #HeterosexualPrideDay though.

Ever heard the phrase "Be the bigger man?" Trump sure hasn't. Nothing about Trump is big.
Guy isn't even aware in the slightest of the power of the Presidency.
What a clown.
Reagan's legacy is, at this point, largely fictional. If we were discussing facts, he's a dirty liberal compared to his manufactured image.
But deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told Fox News on Thursday that Trump, in fact, is the one who has been bullied.
Amazing.
