I'm looking into possibly trying to get a seasonal summer job at a National Park, resort or lodge this summer. I'm on the east coast and if I do it I'm planning on driving there so was thinking Colorado, Wyoming or Montana. I'm looking for places with a lot of trails close by, access to rivers for fishing/kayaking, and food included (housing included would be nice too). I've looked at quite a few places so far (small 20 person staff to large 2,000 plus staff), but Yellowstone kind of sticks out. As far as the job, I would probably do something with customer service, sales or management but would also enjoy maintenance or grounds crew. Don't want to be a kids counselor and have 0 experience working with horses so probably will not go the ranch route unless it is mainly a fishing ranch/lodge. I did a search on the boards and found some threads with info but am just trying to get as much insight into this before I decide if I'm going to do it.
So, I'd like to hear from people who have done this and how was the experience? Where did you work and what was your job? Recommendations on places in these states and why? What is something you didn't like about it or maybe something you wish you had known beforehand? Other questions:
What was the pay like, can you expect overtime, did you get tips, end of season bonus etc..? (I would do this for the experience but would like to come away with some money)
How was the living and food situation? (were you able to walk to work from where you lived?)
If you did it again, would you prefer the same job or something different?
How was training and how accessible were the trails to where you lived?
Anyone familiar with Yellowstone, if I were to end up going this route, any recommendations on what area of the park to work? I understand there are two contracting companies (Xantara and Delaware North), any advice on which one to go with?
Any advice or input on this would be great, thanks!
