It shouldn't be possible to win 8 golds at one Olympic Games. Phelps was beaten four times in Olympic races. If El Guerrouj lost in that many Olympic finals he'd be a nobody.

At the last Olympics swimming had 34 events (17 for each gender). Track and field had 47 events (24 men, 23 women).

Except in swimming it is almost only sprinting events which require the same set of skills whereas in track and field the events are so different that it is not possible to excel at more than one of them.
So?

Not to state the obvious, but NBC likes swimming at the Olympics because it has so many white people.
I'm white and I hate it. A track equivalent would be Bolt winning the 50, 100, backwards 100, 100 on the bend, 200, never mind all the stupid friggin relays. Jeez.
Phelps medals are worth 0.3 T&F medals.

Exactly
But there's also the fact that anyone in the world can run but only the few rich have access to swimming pools, so there's no depth in the sport

Jeeeeezz
The ridiculous amount of events at the Olympic swimming meet is the only thing now keeping USA above China in the medals table.
Swimming isn't even a real sport. It is for fish and other aquatic creatures. For proof look how people's fingers shrivel up when they swim.
It doesn't matter how fast a human can swim when we're not even meant to be in the water.
Ya'll sound like jealous little bitches
In most countries, most of the best runners compete in other sports (futbol, handbol, basebol, etc.). Some exceptions are Kenya and Ethiopia. Most championships end up being the best runners from Ethiopia and Kenya against mid level runners from other countries.
