I have bested a triathlete friend of mine in a half marathon 1:29 to 1:45. However, he has run marathons at 3:48 and finished a couple of ironman triathlons. I have never run or trained for a marathon. So, he has challenged me to a marathon. In fact, he has thrown down the Boston qualifier gauntlet which neither one of has attained. So, now the question is can I best him at the marathon? In his words, only the qualifier time counts for points scored.
We are both 42, I know; old guys playing like kids. But who has the better skill set to achieve the Boston qualifier? He has trained and run the marathon distance in addition to being an ironman finisher. I am a 5k (18:18 PR) road racer who occasionlly runs half marathons for the challenge. From my perspective 26 miles might as well be 1000, it's freakin far to race. For him the marathon is just the third leg in a tri. Mentally, he obviously has the long distance training edge, but I got the faster twitch muscles. It is possible that neither one of us hits the qualifier, but this could be a fun challenge. Any thoughts......?
His challenge started as a Tough Mudder challenge but he changed it to a marathon when he realized the Tough Mudder was basically a half marathon obstacle course.
