From what I recall, no. You are classified based on disability and I do not recall seeing a classification for able bodied who choose to use a wheelchair. But, an able-bodied person can play wheelchair basketball. Michael Jordan could take up wheelchair basketball and play in the Paralympics if he were good enough.
A problem with racing in a wheelchair is that sitting on your legs for 90 minutes or more would not be fun.
There are many wheelchair athletes who can get around on crutches or walkers or have prosthetics, but race in a wheelchair.
That is messing w/ some bad karma.
I was considering paralympic rules not a local marathon.
It does raise the question about major marathons. Do BAA, et al follow paralympic rules in this area?
Alas, wheelchair racing is not that easy.
I remember a non-disabled athlete (runner?) participating in a wheelchair race, I believe it was for a TV Station or magazine or something. Not sure if he showed up in the results or not.
As far as I remember, the opinions among the community were favorable and the athlete mentioned how hard it was.
Of course you have a disadvantage being non-disabled because you carry significant amount of leg muscle (dead weight) that are of no use.
