Gross, but we probably all wonder...
A productive cough or snort is always nice, but what do you do with it? In some environments, it is not appropriate to spit. Will this make sickness longer? I know a few people who spit out stuff (even into water bottles) saying it will excel their recovery from sickness.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that I find getting rid of it to be beneficial.
