According to NYRR Facebook Page, there will be no baggage check at this years marathon. The stupidest thing i have ever heard. If they are having problems with congestion, how about you lower the amount of people in a overcrowded race.

I expect they're going to get a lot of flack about this.
Am I supposed to run with my hotel key and taxi fare? any runner who doesn't run 4 hours and slower is screwed more because there was never any problems for people around 3 hours.
"am I supposed to run with taxi fare and hotel key"
actaully yes - its quite easy - have done this for several years and beleive it or not it doesnt slow you down, even though you are a sub 3 hour runner - which by the way is not really a big deal and doesnt make you special
They are going refund everyone $25 because they no longer have to do baggage check.
Better just not to race NY. I looked at the entry fee, laughed, and decided to run Marine Corps.

Waddle on.

Actually, I wasn't implying 3 hours was special. What I am implying is that there was no congestion if you finished in around 3 hours. You pay over 200 dollars for a race, you expect basic things, like baggage check. Are they going to get rid of water stops next?
When I complain about the walker-jogger crowd I'm told to shut up because it doesn't affect me. Well folks, this is what you get when there is an endless stream of people willing to pay out the ass to waddle around New York City for hours. This "race" is lost to everyone but the elites and the fatties.
yes
Amen. Plus you'd have to sign up wicked early in January.

Why would you want to run it if you weren't elite or a fatty? NYC is the most overrated marathon ever.
When I started running marathons every one of them had a place where you could change and shower as well as stash your stuff during the race. That era's long gone and that's fine. But wow, essentially telling people that anything they wear to the starting line but take off before they race is gone forever is really something. What if you've got a "lucky" pair of sweatpants or something? I agree with you. It means the race is too big.
But they aren't going to make it any smaller. If they can get all those people to pay a massive entry fee they will and the only real response someone who is bothered by this can make is to skip New York and run a marathon with a manageable sized field though even that means you're getting screwed if you've entered this year. The decent thing would be for the NYRRC to offer refunds for people who are really bothered by this new policy or to hold off on implementing it until next year.
thanks
if you have a "lucky" pair of sweats and are older than, say, 8, you probably should go see a shrink.

Don't you have to show ultra early to NYC to ferry to the starting area? What about the clothes you are wearing to stay warm before the start? Are they expecting people to just throw them away. Sounds wasteful.
And yes, in a big circus event marathon like NY, a sub 3 is special. It actually puts in at the top of the list of finishers. Also when you cross the line ahead of the sea of waddlers you don't have the congestion issues like penguins run into.
I assume now that there will be NYC Marathon fanny packs for sale so everyone can carry their keys, money and cell phones during the "race". Clever marketing scheme.

They will donate them.

When I ran it in 2010, you had to check your bag pretty early and then move to a pre-staging area maybe 45 minutes before the start. You'd check a bag with stuff you wanted at the finish and wear "throw away" clothing to keep warm. From the pre-staging area they'd move you to the start on the bridge 10-15 minutes prior to the wave start. On the way to the bridge there was a dumpster bin where you were supposed to leave your extra clothing for donation. I'd assume they haven't change the start logistics.
What's new is that you won't have your own warm clothing and other stuff at the finish except for whatever you choose to carry. If it's a nice day, this might not be a big deal, but if it's 35 and raining it could be really miserable.

OK, we'll do it this way. There were many years when I had ONE pair of sweatpants, lucky or not, because it was all I could afford. Leaving them at a race was not an option. And they aren't even allowing runners an alternative like having a friend who isn't running come to the starting line and take your gear.
None of that is really the issue. NYRRC is taking away a service that has been part of every major race going back to years long before most Letsrun readers were born and that everyone who has run big marathons counts on. If they want to do that it's their business but it's wrong to do it AFTER their field is full of people who had no notice that this was going to happen.
I assume those years are over when you decide to pony up $260 for a marathon.
