This guy is insane ... did this off of a poor start too. Wind was +1.3. 9.89 to win the NCAA Championships.
This guy could be the next Usain Bolt if he focused on sprints. I'm calling it now. His top speed isn't that far off Bolt or Gay's already ... and he doesn't even train for sprints. He's a long jumper who has run the race less than 10 times. Scary.

Impressive performance. His posture the first 40 meters was poor - head way down with his shoulders bent over. A kind form of criticism here, though - it reflects that he is a very talented guy, with fantastic lift the last 15 meters.

This I believe is only Makusha's second track race,according to IAAF.At least Usain Bolt was a highly
accomplished 200 meter sprinter(19.75) before he tried his hand in the 100 meters.
Makusha ran a 9.89 in high humidity. With normal humidity and the same tailwind, he could have easily run a
9.80.
Congrats to Mookie Salaam for his 9.97. Look for him to do great things in the 200. Maurice Mitchell will break 20 seconds as well if weather is co-operative.[quote]chuckie d wrote:

You don't quite understand the effect of humidity on sprinters. Humidity actually helps sprinters go faster. Gaseous H2O has a lower molecular weight, density, and viscocity than gaseous O2, N2, and CO2. Check the so-called "basic" conversions for sprints, which calibrates sprint performances to a zero wind, zero humidity, sea level (i.e. 760 mmHg) status.
I made a mistake. Makusha has run the 100 meters. However, at age 24, he has only done it twice at the collegiate level. In 2008-9, Makusha ran the 60 meters indoors.His PR was 6.60.
I don't think his start was that bad, actually--I think the start form serves him well for the transition phases of the race.

The question is, CAN he improve his start to lower that 9.89?

Don't know wich coach is working with him, but man...this is work in progress. Running those times with such an horrific form and raceplan is giving hopes for the future. Please get this guy to a decent technical coach!

You do realize this is only the 3rd time he has competed in the 100 meter dash as a collegiate (the other two being ACC and Regionals), and that this is the same coach that produced Walter Dix?
Before you complain about the coach.
Consider the fact that all the guys with great form...were behind him.
His run was spectacular - looking forward to watching more races from him. However, I'm surprised no one has brought up the fact that the guy is 24 already and just finished his junior year. Going pro was the right decision for him - he definitely should be competing with the big boys.
He's already 24. He's not the next Usain Bolt.
From the article I read, he finished 4 years at FSU but had a reshirt left due to injury.
Also, hard to criticize the coaching in this case. Over the last 5-6 years he's produced 2 DIFFERENT NCAA champions at 100, 400, and 4x1. THREE different champions over 200. Plus NCAA champs over 60H and 4x1. Not a bad resume.
