Boston Hosptializations

2008 NYC Marathon:

4 were hospitalized, two died, One had already been diagnosed with arteriosclerotic heart-disease. The other 3 also suffered heart-attacks.

2 others had suffered heart-attacks.

So 73, with 9 kept in overnight, seems excessive.

However, my ex-girlfriend has suffered asthma attacks in 5 marathons. She completed 4 of them and the pollen count was high on Saturday which could have triggered asthma in some runners.

However, there may be an explanation. Newton-Wellesley Hospital held a free clinic on Monday afternoon for runners who felt ill or had suffered injuries. These numbers may have contributed to the total.

It may also be a typo.

"Sources say that among the 26,000 people running the Boston Marathon yesterday that 1,324 runners received first aid of some variety during the race and 33 were taken to hospitals for treatment. The 64 year old man remains hospitalized in stable condition."

Did anyone else see the guy laying on the 22-mile marker with a bloodied face? He was passed out on his back, but had obviously landed on his face. He had 2 cops with him when I went by, and 10 minutes later, when my buddy went by, there were 6-7 cops with him. Wonder what happened with that guy.

Treated by medical staff could simply mean getting a bandage for a blister. I have worked a medical tent at a large 10K and we documented every person who came in (except for those who just grabbed NSAIDS out of a barrel).

I believe that there was a high number of people that had windburn.

People don't seem to realize how windy it was at Boston!

BOSTON (AP) — A 64-year-old man running in the Boston Marathon had a heart attack and was revived along the side of the course.

Race officials say he is in stable condition at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Authorities would not identify him, but they said he was from out of state.

James Hooley, with the Boston EMS, said the man had a heart attack less than two miles from the end of the race. He staggered to the ground, and bystanders helped resuscitate him with chest compressions until first aid workers arrived with a defibrillator.

A total of 1,324 runners in the field of more than 26,000 received first aid of some sort along the route or at the finish. Thirty-three were taken to hospitals for treatment.
