I'd like to take a shot at qualifying for the 2012 Marathon Trials, but want to first make a few attempts at the half marathon standard (sub-1:05) before trying to qualify in a marathon. I figure if I can go under 1:05 in a half, then that will save wear and tear by avoiding a full marathon.
Anyway, what are the fastest and most competitive half marathon races in the U.S.? Preferably spring, summer, or fall, since I have a hard time doing speed work in the winter due to snow and ice. (so that rules out Houston for me) I'm looking for races that are near sea level, mostly flat, and have enough competition to pull me along to a big PR. Thanks for any suggestions.
