Team Eugene’s Eric Avila And Oregon’s Sam Prakel Move Up On Olympic Trials 1500 Qualifying List With A “Last Minute” Last Chance Meet

Sunday there was a “last minute” last chance meet at Oregon State University’s Whyte Track and Field Center. Team Run Eugene’s Eric Avila and Oregon’s Sam Prakel highlighted the small meet by running 3:38.30 and 3:38.43 in the 1,500 in a last ditch effort to make the US Olympic Trials. Before these performances, Prakel was only 47th on the descending order list with 3:40.11 and Avila was 51st (3:40.21). They still missed the 3:38.00 auto standard, but they should move up far enough on the list to get into the meet (as long as USATF doesn’t do something dumb like not filling the field).

Team Run Eugene coach and past Olympian Ian Dobson had this to say about the meet:

“Avila and Prakel had an amazing race that will hopefully get them in the Trials. The meet was super last minute but we had amazing support from OSU and our local officials who all wanted to see these guys get one more shot. To see it pay off with those two performances in the 1500 was fantastic.”
