May 22: World Indoor Champ Sifan Hassan Gunning For 2000m World Record At The FBK Games In Hengelo

Press Release
April 26, 2016

HENGELO – Sifan Hassan, the 2015 World Indoor 1500m Champion, will run a 2000 metres-race at the 35th AA Drink FBK Games on Sunday 22 May in Hengelo, the Netherlands. Hassan aims to attack the current world record hold by Sonia O’Sullivan. In 1994 O’Sullivan ran 5:23.36. Various athletes tried to break the world record in the past, but did not succeed.

Hassan knows it’s not a done deal: “I’m really looking forward to the AA Drink FBK Games in Hengelo as it will be my first race on Dutch soil since my gold medal at the World Indoor Championships in Portland. Running for a home crowd excites me and offers me the support to do my upmost. Although I have been running competitions all over the world, Hengelo is special for me. I’m hoping for the crowd to support me in my challenge to run a new world record, as I can need all the support to make my dream come true .”

Hans Kloosterman, Meeting Director of the AA Drink FBK Games: ‘In the history of the AA Drink FBK Games 5 world records have been broken. Needless to say we are hoping for a sixth world record on May 22. As in the past, we will do everything to create the best circumstances possible. With the outstanding performances of Sifan and the earlier announced participation of Dafne Schippers (who will run the 200 metres) we are expecting a great atmosphere in our stadium.’
