We need some big auditing.
For example a cross country team of 10 runners each paying to run for their 3 units of cross country class. Where does that money go?
Uniform top and shorts(reused annually)
Warm ups(reused)
Meet entries
Hotel
Meals on trips
Travel
Coaching
And that’s just cross country. Think about the misuse of funds in all departments. COMPLETE WASTE.
During the great recession, the unemployment rate for those with a bachelor's degree peaked at about 5%, for those without, it got up to about 20%. Colleges have gotten more expensive, but it is still a necessary evil.

That's part of the scam because you are essentially forced to pay a ton of money for college.
Most majors could be completed in 2 years, but colleges make you take 2 years worth of unrelated classes to get even more of your money.
You should be able to graduate with a degree in communication, psychology, economics, english, etc. in 2 years. Some science majors like biology or chemistry or engineers should be 3 years max.
Maybe college isn’t a right and isn’t for everyone?

You have to look at it holistically. The cross country team is just a cost center. Maybe they'll attract a good runner once ever five years who will go on to do his/her PhD then do research and bring a few million bucks into the coffers each year. Totally worth the cost of the re-used uniforms. I guess the "Bean Counter" moniker didn't come from higher-level financial training.

Yes college is a scam, especially the filler programs that likely get you nowhere after you graduate. It is all about the money and these filler programs bring in a lot of it. But without the filler programs, colleges would be a lot less popular, as would college sports. There would be no glorification of college life because it would only be for nerds. It would be thought of as a nerd facility. Instead, it serves as a life stepping stone for many young adults, regardless of their degree.
I am going to disagree, sort of. For strictly stills development, college is terrible investment.
However, college can broaden your perspective in 2 ways:
1) Intellectual, skills, and academic growth through class work; and
2) Personal growth from spending time with a diverse set of individuals.
I don't know how y'all did college, but I spent a ton of time bonding with people from RADICALLY different backgrounds from my own. I learned to see new perspectives, live on my own, and try new things out in the forgiving cradle of college.
Do you need college for this? Absolutely not. You could learn most of what you learn in college by traveling and reading a ton of books. Most people at college age, myself included, are not motivated enough to engage in the sort of rigorous self study college forces you to do.

Learn to read. I'm talking about eliminating classes that aren't necessary. A civil engineer doesn't need to take 2 writing classes, a language class, communication, psychology, Bio 101, Chem 101 and other classes that are required to graduate. There are likely a few science classes that aren't really necessary too.

I am an engineer. I graduated in 4 years despite changing majors from electrical to mechanical after my freshman year. Of course, most of those classes you mentioned I tested out of in high school. Where my kids go to school, they can take classes like those at the university in town while they are in high school and get course credit on the tax payers dime so long as they have a decent head on their shoulders.

You're lucky man. My college said I had to retake a course if it was considered a "core class" to my major even though I had 5s on tons of AP test subject. Mot of my first two semesters were redoing chemistry, calculus, etc. that I already knew.
The costs are inflated.
It is necessary for the job market.
Anyone traditionally qualified for elite intellectual careers can earn full rides to good places. I did not even have perfect test scores and earned full academic scholarships to any mid-tier and some top-top-tiers.
Wow, such a brave unpopular opinion.
Reading all of the pathetic threads on here from guys who can't offer anything to the opposite sex makes me think that most aren't making the most of their college investment.

Where I live (Canada) it's 4 to 5 years, depending on where you came from. There's nothing wrong with taking classes outside of your major, university is a place to explore your interests and educate yourself in many domains ... it's not vocational school.
I do agree that American universities are grossly overpriced, that should be fixed through the gov't. I would be annoyed with having to pay 40k a year for classes like Intro to Psych

That's exactly the problem, most of the top engineering schools are over 70k per year, and nearly half of the classes you take are intro to pysch, intro to sociology, etc.
Yea I totally understand your opinion now .. I'm fine with taking those classes bc they are somewhat interesting and I'm only paying 4-5k a year but for 70k I would share the same opinion as u.
