Over the winter (December-March) I put in a really good base of 60 miles a week with a down week of 40 every 4th week and I also peeked at 70 at around March 1. I also ran ran 5k tempo runs at 5:50-5:35 pace and ran 14-16 mile long runs at about 6:30-7:00 pace depending on how I felt. Moving into April, I started to add speed work.... I’d usually do a mile workout and a 2 mile workout each week since I wanted to time trial both of them before summer base training. For example, workouts like 5x600 with 2 minutes rest 8x400 with a minute rest or 400 jog would be on Tuesday and then 6x800 with 2 minutes rest would also be done on Friday. Fast forward to now and I just hit a huge pr of 4:43 in the mile yesterday and I now have my eyes set on a sub 10 2 mile (I’m more of an endurance guy so I think it’s possible) if not as close as possible. My question is, my last 60 mile week was about 3-4 weeks ago, and since then I’ve been hovering around 40-45, do you guys think I can get in a good block of training from now until May 23 to be ready for a 2 mile race on the 30? Or should I race sooner? I’m worried that my peak fitness may not last long enough to make the end of May so that’s why I’m asking this question. Also how would you go about peaking for this event in my situation. (Mileage workouts etc) any responses are appreciated, thanks in advance.
