I just bought a pair and tried them on for a run. Had to wear them lower around my waste b/c the liner was so small. It was super uncomfortable and think I'm going to have to cut the liner out to ever use them.

With the exception of the AeroSwift shorts, Nike running shorts have been trash for years now.
They are charging premium prices for shorts that have using the same dri-fit fabric for 10+ years. I guess if you change up the styles and colors and re-name them every so often people will think they are getting something new.
I have the same issue with a pair of Nike shorts, but they're a few years old so it's not a new issue. I thought that they just screwed up at the factory and put the wrong size liner in the short.
I noticed that a few years ago and have had to stop buying their running shorts. They used to be all I ran in because I preferred the liner fabric, but I’ve had to move on. New ones are unwearable.
the Nike 5" Flex stride shorts are my absolute favorites (although the 2019 key pocket style is better than the 2020 key pocket).
I found the same thing to be true. Last pair of Nike split shorts that had a decent liner was 2011-2013.

Been wearing Nike running shorts since the 1980s. First noticed the too-small liners in shorts I bought in mid-2017. Quite annoying.
Adds apparel sizing to the long-standing question of, "How the hell do companies that make SHOES for a living (and have in most cases been doing it for decades), STILL manage to sell shoes that significantly differ in sizing between models and/or years ???" Put another way, WHY, in 2020, should it EVER be necessary for a vendor to tell you whether or not a shoe fits true to size?
In this case, apparently someone at Nike said, "You know, I think that balls and other gear have gotten smaller, let's reduce our liner size by a noticeable (and excessive) amount." And their bosses said, "Good idea, let's do that."
I have read reviews on runningwarehouse commenting on the sizing in the liners having shrunk with this new edition of shorts
The liner in Nike shorts has definitely have gotten smaller/tighter. I noticed it in shorts I bought last year and the year before.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent (comfortable) 4 or 5" inseam short under $40?

North Face Better than Naked (on sale). Under Armour makes some pretty good ones, too. Brooks Sherpa (on sale)
Why not buy something like Runderwear or compression shorts and wear those under existing running shorts? It's why I've been doing for years.

I bought the pair I'm talking about from Dick's along with a pair of adidas shorts. I'm wearing the Adidas one's now as I type this post run. They fit like a dream and were below that dollar amount.
Run it 3S Short 5" - $35
Thanks! I'll check out the suggestions.
Nike was my go-to brand for shorts for years, but things change...just like shoes I guess. They can't keep themselves from messing up a good thing in the name of fashion (or maybe cost cutting).
This is one of the tips in my book. 200 Tips Every Runner Should Know. Cut out the liner and replace it with a brief made of wicking fabric. I routinely do this with all my new running shorts. You get the fit you want regardless of which shorts you wear. You can also buy less expensive linerless shorts and wear your preferred brief under them.
The Asics ASX running brief makes a great liner, but I've used boxer briefs by Puma, Adidas, UnderArmor, Body Glove, Reebok, and surprisingly even found one brief from Hanes that works, although most briefs I've tried from Hanes and Fruit of the Loom didn't work.
Not only do you get the perfect liner fit, you can wear longer boxer briefs in the winter to keep your legs a little warmer.
I just use shorts with no liner and sport boxer briefs. No more chafing.
Ever heard of a jock strap?
Running shorts before the 70s didn't have liners. That's why you wore a jock.
Now if you want to go commando, that's your problem.
The lining seems to run high and tight. I just got used it I suppose.
What I don't like are their
1. Shorts with a slit up the sides (exposing too much thigh) and;
2. Shorts without pockets (too keep a tissue to blow my nose)
I've considered nike running shorts to have the best liner since I started running 19 years ago. It still holds true now, though I haven't tried every single brand. I only run in shorts with a 2-3.5" inseam. The good models are the aeroswift and fast shorts, I like to use the former just for racing with an occasional workout thrown in, and the latter for just general running and workouts. There are also the challenger shorts, listed as team uniform shorts on running warehouse.

I just bought a new pair of these a week ago, same liner nike has used for years, and they are great.
If the liner us too tight just buy a medium instead of small? My aeroswift half tight liners fit perfect size M and my flex 2 in 1 half tight shorts
I looked this up for this reason. I have a nike pair from a while now and its briefs liner is too small. The shorts themselves are good quality, and I like them, but the liner is bad.
Recently I bought two more nike shorts, one of them with a boxer briefs liner, and the other is briefs. The boxer briefs shorts were of good size and I like them a lot, but the other pair is even smaller than the one I have from before.
In a recent runninig session I felt the briefs liner is too tight I felt like it was gonna suffocate me, I tried to wear the shorts a bit lower but that did not feel right. I was re-adjusting the whole time and luckily it was at night and very few people where there in the area where I was running. I even had to (point my pp) up to leave more room for them down there.
I think I'll cut this liner or take it to a tailor to fix it maybe.
Best regards
