False premise. When the number of active cases goes down to an acceptable level then the lockdowns can gradually lift. Herd immunity was never the end point.

The rub is we need testing and contact tracing in place to contain future outbreaks.

To get to herd immunity, we need at least 200 million people (around two thirds of the country) to have acquired the disease and built up resistance to it.

200,000,000 / 100,000 = 2,000 days = around 5.5 years

If hospitals get overwhelmed then like 5% of the world's population will die along the way, including people with normal medical conditions. The whole idea is to avoid getting to the point where that happens. Having said that, NYC might well be on its way.

So you want to lock down everything until late 2021? How are you going to bail out everyone affected? We didn't even have a balanced budget during the good years (2005-2006, and 2017-2019), and while some deficits are inevitable, nothing has ever been done on this scale before.

More evidence that we should open everything up. Those tests were done over a week ago, so the percentage of people with immunity is probably around 40-50% now. How much worse can it get from there?

Here, once it passes medicinal safety.. it will be mass produced without being approved for clinical 2. We will be in parallel production blind. This is costly but the pot of gold and fame is considerable.

Furthermore, as remdesivir and hydrohlorquine were given out without full safety, these vaccines will be given out earlier on ‘compassionate use’ also. Consider it a live clinical trial with your consent.

Unfortunately, it looks like the 2 antivirals don’t work. Official scouting reports due in week or 2.

With herd immunity coming too slowly if at all, we HAVE to have that vaccine. It is being expedited in all haste all over.

Except this isn't the case. At least not for most of the morons you see on the internet. Georgia reported an average <1 rate of spread, and announced they might be lifting their lockdown protocols and everyone flipped sh!t.

Wrong...it doesn't sound like a vaccine will work for this. So, it's either lockdowns forever or you open the floodgates and get exposed to the virus. There's an old saying: You can run from pathogens but you can't hide - they'll eventually catch up to you. People are going to have to eat healthy, excercise, increase vitamin D levels, etc. - strengthen the immune system and fight this virus head on. Fortunately, the vast majority who get infected show mild or no symptoms - so it can be done.

I'm with other people ITT regarding vaccines. From what I hear, the fastest a vaccine has been developed is something like 4 years. We will have to live with this in our society and go about our daily lives, possibly for years.
