So, if you have raced a 5k in both a flat and a VF or Next% - which shoe has your PB?
I’m 17:21 Streak 6 (PB)
I’m 17:26 VF4%

I'm running a road 5K time trial next weekend and am currently deciding between the two
It depends on your mechanics and form, and probably to an extent your build. You will gain a lot more useful knowledge from time trialing yourself than going off the experiences of others.
I prefer the streak lt4s for a road 5k. But I don’t like the Next%s at all.
Haven't done a TT yet, but for 5k paced workouts I find VF 4%'s are much better than my adidas boston 8 flats .
LT 4s all the way. Granted I've never worn the VFs ever but that's a shoe designed for the marathon. flats are fun as hell too

Boston 8 are hardly flats... 10 mm drop and the weight almost 9 oz.....
Sorry - I meant adidas adios 3, the boston 8's are my jogging shoes. The bostons are pretty good for quicker stuff nonetheless. VF>Adios

Boston 8’s aren’t even close to ‘flats’. They’re just a lightish trainer.

Yeah he made a typo.
Anyway, definitely run the 5k in Flats!! LT 4 all the way. VF is not for that distance.
I tested the Reebok pro against the vaporfly 4 % and against the Skechers Razor 3 (my daily trainer) for a 20 minute run at 6:00 pace. Heart rate was almost identical between the Reebok and 4 %, but heart rate was quite a higher with Skechers. Major difference was cadence was higher in the Reebok and stride was longer in the Vaporfly. Legs fresher in the Vaporfly. Probably depends on the type of runner you are. I’m mostly longer distance.

So you didn't draw a conclusion.
My conclusion is the vaporfly is not anymore efficient than a light race flat for 20 minutes on the roads.

People have run ridiculous 5ks in the Next percent I would argue they are the best shoe from the 5k-Marathon no question
They’ve (Rhonex) also have run ridiculous 10ks in the Takumi Sens. At the half and up it appears the shoe advantage over flats is inarguable. Below that, seems to come down to the runner.
The Next %s may leave your legs less trashed though.
I’ll test the Next% versus my Nike Speed Racer 6. Same course. Same shape. Same time of day. Same kit. Same pre-trial nutrition.
I’ll post all my stats up here after the TT.
There was a study out recently that found a pretty big scatter in comparing VF to flats in a 3k time trial. It seems like they work better for some people than others, so you aren't going to get a firm yes or no on this.
On average the Vaporflys were 13 seconds faster over a 3km time trial than a racing flat.
Seems like the Vaporflys are a better choice.

For some, but not all. For some of the runners in this study the VaporFlys were a WORSE choice.
It seems rearfoot strikers were better responders
Tried the VF4% in a 5k, compared to LT4s, the vaporflies feel way worse. Too much squish for how much i wanna put into the ground. I've seen a lot of the older crowd running in them though for 5k. It's interesting that most of them never ran in flats before but they switch over to these gladly. Can't tell if it's nike advertising or they just can't work with low cushioned shoes. If I remember correctly though, the Streak 6s shouldn't be too bad on the feet?
