I tried to join XC last year, but I couldn't run a mile in under 6 minutes during time trials, so the coach cut me.

I think 6 minutes is a reasonable standard. It basically just ensures that people are actually running over the summer and not just showing up for the first day of practice completely out of shape.
As my coach used to tell us, the XC season is half way over by the time of the first official practice. The real meaningful training takes place over the summer. If you've put in the mileage in June and July, running a 6 minute mile in August shouldn't be too tough even if you aren't the most talented kid on the team.

Sub 6 is a good standard for girls. For guys, it should be sub 5:15.

JV kids just there for something to do.
6 means you would embarass yourself finishing a minute+ behind everyone in the JV race.
I cut anybody over 5:30. We normally have about 30 guys break it. Why would you think you should be on the team? Does the basketball and football coach have to keep guys around who will be ever get in a a game?

Because 5:30 is an unreasonable standard for a new high school freshman? Are you seriously turning people away from running with that ridiculous and stupid standard?
XC (and spring/winter track) are no cut sports in my school.
Totes unfair.
I got cut from my basketball team because I couldn’t make a layup. I mean, they only gave me 47 tries.
Baseball team did the same thing. Not my fault I got confused and brought my golf clubs to tryouts.

What the hell? I been running 20 MPW over the summer for June and July, and couldn't break 7 in August
I think everyone should be allowed to run XC. Top 7 in each division whether that be by grade or varsity/jv are the only ones that matter. I could see a coach refusing to run a 7th man in a varsity race because he’s running in the 19s with the rest of varsity in 17s and 16s but some of the slower JV kids often end up being some of the most like able personalities on the team. I ran 30:26 freshman year as I was overweight but I just kept grinding with lots of support from my coach and got down to 16:07 by senior year. I wouldn’t have come back if my coach cut me, and I ended up being our 3rd scorer.

GTFO and stop re-starting the same thread multiple times
Yes. And we are consistently the best team in the state and one of the best in the region. When you demand greatness, you get greatness. Teams who let anybody on the team end up being a dumping ground for kids whose parents make them do a sport.
Did you last thread on this not answer your question

Are you fucking batshit insane?
You start new threads but you are saying the same thing in every thread. Tell us more of the story. Tell us home many males went out for your high school T&F team. Tell us the level of performance of the lads on the T&F team. You continue to go on about being cut. Think about what it is like for T&F coach and athletic director. Give us the number of guys who went out for the team. Think about how unfair it is for the serious T&F athletes if the track is crowded with guys like you who run 6:15 to 6:30 1600m.

Even though slow runners don't affect the performance of top runners on the team?

Everyone is answering, you just don't like the answers.

It's up to the coach. I would say you should be able to do a few meets, maybe a duel meet.
Even a 6 something mile is somewhat respectable. It's all relative. 6 is better than 7. 7 better than 8.
Coach was just saying that with a time >6 minutes, you are going to be at the back of the pack in high school cross country races.
It's not an insult, it's a standard to show what should be expected to be in races and be even remotely competitive. Between being cut from cross country and indoor or outdoor, you could improve a great deal and surprise your coach and others.
Girls coach here. I don’t cut anyone that is willing to give me their best effort. Also, I the past 10 years I have had two very strong captains that couldn’t break 27 minutes in a 5k. One in 2011 and one in 2018 . The one in 2017 we had was really incredible.
But...I don’t judge other coaches for making cuts. Although it’s not true for everyone a higher number of the slower runners are not as motivated to run fast. It’s just the way it is.
But I like them. They tend to be more grounded and sometimes calm the nerves for those that take it too seriously. They also have fast friends that might my be there otherwise if they were not on the team.
