HS incoming sophmore.
Haven't been that much lately, but I want to start base training for xc as soon as May starts. I can run 5 flat and sub 18 with a couple of easy runs a week to give you an idea of where I'm at (never done any real training. cross was 20mpw). My plan this summer is to build up to about 50-55mpw starting in May, so I'll have 16 weeks to build up from 20-25 to 50-55. Because I have so much time, I'm going to build up slowly so as to avoid injury, maybe I'll consistently hit 50 for the last 6-8 weeks. I plan on doing CV Fartleks (can you recommend some example workouts) on Tuesdays, Friday long tempos @5k pace +50 seconds to a minute, and an easy long run on Saturday. Easy runs in between.
1. When should I do strides?
2. When should I do hill work? What workouts? I've heard that hill work is used by tinman year-round, but I'm very wary of interval workouts like 10x a hill, as I get burned out easily with workouts like that.
3. How long should by tinman tempo be relative to my weekly mileage? Would 6:50 be appropriate for an 18-minute 5k guy?
4. Since I haven't done much training before, I'm hoping I'm going to be in at least sub 17 shape by the end of the summer. How should I adjust my training as the summer progresses?
