Is it low? Do I have zero talent in running?
Is it low? Do I have zero talent in running?
a vo2 max number by itself isn't too helpful. provide an honest description of yourself
A VO2 max of 37 is pretty low compared to most runners but it is somewhat trainable while also not being the most reliable indicator of fitness. There are lots of factors in running besides VO2 max including running economy, vVO2max, lactate threshold, etc., the point is you can't determine talent based off of a single number.
I agree with the other guy, more info is needed.
What VO2 max do must runners have starting off?
most beginner runners don't take vo2 max tests, so we cannot give you an accurate number.
but if you want someone to tell you to give up running, then i can do that for you. otherwise, please provide more info, as honestly as you can.
Post covid-19 it's considered fantastic.
Agreed. It'd be more helpful if you'd give us info regarding previous training history and current times.
Studies show that you can increase your absolute VO2 max about 1 liter per minute with training. If you weigh 70 kg, your absolute VO2 max is 37*70=2590 ml per minute. Improve that 1 liter, and you get to 3590 ml, and, at the same weight of 70 kg, you'd be at 3590/70= 51.
If you also have weight to lose, that 51 goes up inverse proportionally.
What the F? That makes no logical sense.
So if the max VO2 Max I can have is 51, that I am doomed to be a shitty runner?

not necessarily. you could be even shittier.
VO2 max is not as sexy as people used to think. Especially starting VO2 max is probably one of the worst indicators of potential there is. Also everyone's VO2 max responds differently to training. Some people are super responders. Some people's VO2 max will barely budge. There are elite athletes who's vo2 max's go down by 40 points after detraining.
Do not worry about it. Do you enjoy running? What kind of training are you doing? How much do you weigh? If you are a beginner you are bound to improve and probably quite a bit if you do training that is right for you. What are your times so far?
The problem is I am 6'0'' and 150 Ib and had been running for a year, yet my VO2 Max only went up to 40.
My current mile time is 7:30. A year ago. It was 8:05.
Stop trolling
Well, I have been training for a year and doing a mix of easy runs, tempo runs, and hill sprints. My mile time year ago was 8:05, and I brought it down to 7:30
Mine was around that when i started and by doing some harder runs now is 59 I'll take it ;)
Years ago the average male college student (not including athletes) had a VO2max of 41

Unless an elite athlete puts on some serious weight, he is not going to lose anywhere close to 40 points from his VO2 Max.
I haven't ran at all in 4 years and just started again. My first run Garmin put my v02 at 51 at 79kg. I'm 8 years out of school which is when I last trained, unsure what it was before.
I wasn't particularly talented, so I'd wager OPs v02 is low.
