Inevitable, although a monumental financial loss to both Japan and the games Sponsors.

According to the statement, the Olympic flame will stay in Japan during the delay. The Games will also continue to officially be called "Tokyo 2020," even as they move to 2021.
What happens to worlds?
what happens to trials?? waiting on an official announcement before seeking refunds on tickets, dorms flights.
Jackass, there are a million threads on this already. Stop creating duplicate threads.
Good, so I still get to run Tokyo Marathon in the Olympic Year, as was my original plan;) LOL Seriously though, good decision, long time coming but there isn't any other way but to postpone it!

Worlds in Eugene probably goes to 2022
Not sure how there would be 5 years with Worlds in a row since there would not be Worlds in 2024.

How about we dump silly crazy priced sport events altogether. Instead we use the money to insure clean water, nutritious food, and affordable quality housing for the entire world. This virus is killing the already unhealthy. It’s time to wake up to what is important and seeing who can run faster is not important.

You must be a blast at parties. Also, why are you on a running site?

Running is not a sport it’s an exercise. I run to improve my health not to try to get top 5 at the local gobble gobble. I come here because there’s a little bit of good information on this site about how to get healthier. Of course after you wade through all the sewer.

More time for Nike to get back into the lab to make more controversial shoes.
I am surprised that nobody considered postponing a couple of months until late September/early October. Nobody seemed to seriously entertain this idea. This would give time for the epidemic to die down without having put things on hold for a whole year. Perhaps that would still be disruptive to some athletes training. Incidentally, the '88 Games were also held late around that time of year instead of the summer (for reasons not clear to me) and that was a success.

It's true. Your comment was uninspired, boring, tedious, wearisome, insipid, banal, stale, vapid, dull, lifeless, tired, unimaginative, flat, bland, lame and moranic.

Wait a minute....
Does Lolo Jones suggest this somehow affects her?
The only way she was going to be there was in the stands - with a paid ticket.

NBC paid $1.45B for the rights to broadcast the Olympics. As a midsummer event, the Olympics only have regular season baseball to compete for attention. Push the Olympics into the fall and it has to compete with the NFL and MLB playoffs. If the Olympics were pushed to the fall, I'm sure NBC would insist, and the IOC would have to pay back a good chunk of that $1.45B. I believe the Seoul Olympics and the first Tokyo Olympics were held in October to avoid summer weather. Doesn't explain why this Tokyo Olympics was scheduled in its usual midsummer slot. Probably again because of money.
Question I have is what do the U.S. Marathon team members do till next year? Train for a year +? That's an awfully long buildup. Race a fall marathon, then start the Olympic buildup? Aside from the postponement it's kinda great for them as no stress about making the team next year options as to racing/training. A regular Olympic year means a financial hit for marathoners as it means no spring or fall marathon.
