As I'm getting older, running 8ish miles per day is getting to be quite a grind. I have considered a schedule of three 20 mile run per week with no running on the other days.
Reasons:
-I feel like there is no recovery running nearly everyday. With this schedule I would get 2 consecutive days off every week, sounds amazing. If I were to run 20 on Friday AM and then 20 on Monday PM, that is 72 hours recovery.
-Logistics. There is so much overhead time with running, especially in the winter. I would save 3-4 times of getting dressed, stretching, all that, per week. Making plans for child-care is also simplified.
-Training Specificity. I am getting more interested in ultra stuff or what I think of as adventure runs. Basically un-organized challenges for myself, such as running up Beartooth Pass in MT or the Border Route Trail in MN. Generally, this will be longer stuff and I'm not really concerned with my time.
This concept would apply to my base phase, which is almost all the time now. If I do a race, I'll run a few specific workouts starting about 3 weeks out.
I'm curious if anybody has tried anything like this and how it worked.? My main question is if I am delusional that the additional recovery time will be satisfactory after running 20. I am also wondering about the physiological effects vs. a more conventional training plan.
Thanks in advance for any useful replies, non-useful but funny replies appreciated all the same .
