I just finished reading Daniels' book and highly recommend it to readers of all levels and abilities. However, I did notice a possible discrepancy, or possibly I'm just confused.
Daniels 2nd edition book has training intensity paces based on VDOT for all types of runs on pages 48-50. Later in the book, there is also a table of training paces for 1.5K-3K racers, and another table for 5K-15K racers. Not surprising, the R,I,T & M paces in the 1.5K-3K and the 5K-15K tables are close to identical to the corresponding VDOT training paces in the table on pages 48-50. However, the E paces are different across the board. Here's an example:
VDOT 44 E pace on page 48-50 table 9:27
VDOT 44 E pace on 5K-15K training plan table 8:28-9:00
VDOT 44 E pace on 1.5K-3K training plan table 8:40-9:10
The 5K/15K e pace is nearly 10% faster than the regular e pace. Why would the e paces be faster for these races, and why would the e pace for the longer 5K/15K races be faster than the shorter 1.5K/3K races.
Can anybody shed some light on this. I am training for a 5K, which of these e paces should I use?
