Just curious, with the advent of ex. Kenyan and Moroccan athletes running for countries like Quatar and Bahrain - do the citizens in those countries actually follow track and do they know who Shaheen and Ramzi are - or is it just the Federations in those countries (Quatar and Bahrain) who go all out to support the newly transplanted runners?
The rich Gulf States have not had any distance running tradition to date, and now have a few world class athletes, however both countries - Quatar and Bahrain - have hot climates not conducive for distance running training, and in the region the only suitable area to train would be in the mountains in Saudi Arabia. Some training could be accomplished in the winter months in Quatar and Bahrain, when temps. hover around the 22 degrees (70 fahrenheit) mark, but for many months of the year (April to October) serious training in Quatar and Bahrain would be difficult indeed.
It is sad to know that Shaheen is now ''Persona Non Grata'' in Kenya, and been asked to leave the country by the Kenyan Athletics officials.
Also, it would be interesting to know whether (in the case of the Kenyans) they (the Kenyans) do actually convert to the Muslim religion voluntarily, or are forced to do so?
Anyone from the Gulf region (Quatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Emirates) on the board who might like to provide info. would be much appreciated.
